About The Position

Under general supervision, the Social Service Aide-BJM provides supervision and care of abandoned, neglected, and abused children in protective custody at the Betty Jo McNeece Receiving Home (BJMRH). This role assists Social Workers by performing designated tasks related to family functioning, childcare, and child welfare services. It is a paraprofessional position that differs from a Social Worker by requiring a lower level of skill and training, and from a general Social Service Aide by requiring specific skills for working at the Emergency Shelter Home. Incumbents work under close supervision within established guidelines.

Requirements

• Equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college, including thirty (30) semester units in social welfare, social/human service, sociology, or other behavioral science OR Two (2) years of full-time experience comparable to the Homemaker or Vocational Assistant classification OR Two (2) years of full-time experience in a public or private Social Services agency providing services to disadvantaged adults or children.
• Possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and a state of health consistent with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship by the start date of employment.
• Valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
• Employees may also be required to drive their own car and provide proof of car insurance.
• Pre-employment drug testing, a physical examination, and fingerprinting for a background investigation are required.
• Employees in this position will be required to drive in and out of the county to conduct business.
• Employees may be required to work with clients of various age groups and clients with mental health issues, physical health issues, substance abuse issues, victims of abuse and/or domestic violence, at risk of abuse, and financial instability.
• Employees may encounter hostile and emotionally troubled clients, including children, parents and adults under the influence of controlled substances and alcohol.
• All Imperial County employees are considered Disaster Service Workers and might be required to take the associated FEMA training.
• As a State of Calif. disaster service worker, employees may be required to work during a declared emergency or disaster.

• The ability to speak, read, and write Spanish in addition to English would be an asset in this position.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily housekeeping chores, such as cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, mopping, and dusting; change bed linens for smaller children and supervise older children in making their beds.
• Apply group supervision skills; supervise children in indoor and outdoor recreational activities, such as crafts, games, television, and athletics.
• Conduct ongoing client needs assessments and verify needs by contacting medical and health services providers.
• Assist with children's personal hygiene, including bathing, showering, dressing, mending, diapering, and toilet training.
• Intervene with crisis intervention, typically in a supportive role.
• Call for supervisory support when necessary.
• Present client assessments to professional staff for approval.
• Complete narrative reports regarding a client's condition and services provided and/or recommended.
• Assist children with school homework and impose restrictions as necessary.
• Make client referrals to medical personnel or social workers as needed.
• Administer first aid and CPR according to established guidelines.
• Monitor the medical and psychological care of abused children.
• Supervise visits between parents and children to prevent detrimental actions and report observations to social workers.
• Transport children to school, physician appointments, and local recreation activities.
• May testify in juvenile court hearings.
• Assist Social Workers in providing a variety of child social services.
• Act as a liaison between clients and professional staff, individuals, and groups in the community serviced.
• Directly assist families in using and learning about the resources of society, particularly medical, legal, and employment services.
• Report all suspected child abuse in accordance with California law.
• Maintain records of work performed.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
• Change diapers, carry infants/toddlers, and secure children in car seats.
• Represent the County in administrative appeals and fair hearings.
