The Social Media Manager supports AARP Foundation’s social media strategy by creating, and optimizing social content across platforms. This role blends hands-on production and content creation, capturing and editing shortform video, writing caption copy, packaging posts, and managing assets with strategic support to brand and content leads, including contributing to content calendars, reviewing performance data, and identifying opportunities to strengthen follower engagement. The Social Media Manager plays an essential role in helping to grow engagement from key audiences across social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn while ensuring AARP Foundation mission and brand alignment.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and producing content for social media accounts for brands, organizations, or agencies, with demonstrated growth in engagement across platforms.
  • Strong social-first content production skills, including ideating, capturing, editing, packaging, and publishing short‑form content across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Experience in short‑form video editing required, with a strong portfolio demonstrating end‑to-end ownership of original social and short‑form video content from concept through execution.
  • Exceptionally strong writing and visual storytelling skills, with the ability to write compelling, audience‑appropriate caption copy and translate ideas into engaging social-first content.
  • Deep understanding of social media best practices, trends, and platform-specific nuances, paired with curiosity and a willingness to test, learn, and iterate as platforms evolve.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Experience using performance data and basic social metrics to inform and refine content, while maintaining a strong bias toward creative execution and production.
  • Experience with creative tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva, and the ability to adapt assets for different platforms and formats.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements communications and outreach strategies tailored for target audiences, digital channels, and strategic objectives that inform, educate, and influence both internal and external audiences.
  • Manages organization's digital properties. Supports and manages the overall strategic direction of organizational digital platforms. Optimizes online channels against key performance indicators and makes data-informed decisions.
  • Oversees content creation for various digital platforms. Leads efforts to identify and document strategies for campaigns, working with multiple business units. Provides analyses and recommendations on digital strategies that align with organizational initiatives and goals. Identifies appropriate channels. Designs campaigns to meet specific and varied business unit objectives. Tracks performance and implements necessary changes.
  • Works with internal and external teams to develop and execute digital marketing strategies that increase organizational brand equity and build affinity and engagement among programs. Builds and manages strategic partnerships across the enterprise to enhance business unit effectiveness on digital and social channels.
  • Tracks and measure results and KPIs and adjusts tactics, accordingly. Keeps abreast of the latest digital trends and best practices to inform digital marketing strategies, as well as to aid internal knowledge sharing.
  • Provides exceptional client service by developing timelines to meet project commitments and ensuring deliverables from across the organization and external partners are on time.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with internal clients, ensuring a solid understanding of their objectives, developing plans to achieve them across channels (e.g., Email, SMS, Paid Search, etc.), proactively surfacing new opportunities, and productively resolving any challenges.
  • Identifies vendors best suited to advance organizational goals and proactively manages vendor relationships to ensure successful completion of projects, obligations, and expectations.
