About The Position

The SMT Repair Operator is responsible for performing detailed rework, soldering, and inspection of ADTRAN product assemblies. This role ensures Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and through‑hole (PTH) assemblies meet ADTRAN quality standards through precise workmanship, inspection, and adherence to engineering documentation. The position plays a critical role in maintaining product quality, reliability, and manufacturing flow.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to successfully complete ADTRAN Level 2 Solder Certification.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in fine‑pitch soldering and microscopic rework.
  • Knowledge of SMT and through‑hole assembly processes.
  • Familiarity with IPC‑A‑610 workmanship standards.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to operate a manual pallet jack.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to follow written, verbal, and visual work instructions.
  • Regular standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands, fingers, and arms for fine motor manipulation.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds independently and more with assistance.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required to handle small components under magnification.
  • Ability to see colors, symbols, and fine details.
  • Ability to hear alarms and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English.
  • Exposure to solder fumes and manufacturing environments.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including eye protection and respirators as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an electrical or mechanical manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience using AOI equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect SMT assemblies using Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) equipment and visual inspection to ADTRAN, Q50, and IPC‑A‑610 standards.
  • Perform disassembly, rework, repair, and reassembly of SMT and through‑hole components per approved work instructions and engineering documentation.
  • Execute fine‑detail soldering and component rework using microscopes and precision tools.
  • Identify and correct common component, soldering, flux, and PCB cleanliness defects.
  • Utilize Bills of Material (BOMs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and process documentation to ensure product compliance with current specifications.
  • Accurately scan and track work orders and serial numbers using Production Manager (PM) / FactoryLogix (FLx) systems.
  • Ensure proper workmanship and route completed units to the next manufacturing operation.
  • Maintain 100% accuracy, quality, traceability, and functional verification.
  • Cross‑train and support other production roles as needed to meet workflow demands.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and attendance requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of manufacturing and quality objectives.
