About The Position

The Small Craft Maintenance Technician Lead will perform organizational- and intermediate-level maintenance and Depot Level overhaul on all types of internal combustion engines. This role involves preventive maintenance on auxiliary equipment and small craft diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, and drive shafts for operational and logistical requirements for SBTC. The technician will track maintenance schedules and workloads, review technical manuals, and provide recommendations for revisions. They will also provide input for commercial maintenance or repair packages to ensure repairs are accurately described and meet specifications. If repairs do not meet specifications, the technician will assist with generating paperwork to request permission from Naval Special Warfare Command (WARCOM) to operate the craft with temporary repairs. The role includes mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and engine overhauls on various outboard and diesel engines, as well as equipment trailers. Fabrication and fitting of tubing and flexible hose assemblies, monitoring electrical charging and regulating systems, operating hydraulic equipment, controlling spills, and completing maintenance data system forms are also key responsibilities. The technician will conduct preventive maintenance and repair on various types of small craft, including repairs and maintenance on specially designed navigation and communication equipment. They will also overhaul internal combustion engines, adjust engine components, check bearing clearances, and troubleshoot engine blowers and turbochargers. Training in troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of craft will be conducted. The role involves tracking hours, fuel, and maintenance costs, as well as training records for civilians and active-duty military. Liaison with outboard engine, hulls, and trailer manufacturers, research and tracking of repair parts, monitoring warranties, and submitting claims for reimbursement are also part of the duties. Assisting with maintaining a shop with necessary tools, equipment, and safety gear is required. Reviewing engineering logs and records to identify trends and develop corrective action plans, along with conducting periodic craft and engine inspections, are also responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) years’ experience in preventive and corrective maintenance, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, fiberglass hull repairs, and welding repair of a variety of small maritime craft ranging from 25 to 50 feet.
  • Three (3) years’ experience using the Navy’s Maintenance and Material Management System (3-M) Program to include the Navy tag-out procedures.
  • Certified through factory trained schools to conduct warranty repairs for Evinrude, Caterpillar, Yamaha, and Mercury Marine engines, to include ordering, inspecting, and returning defective parts back to the manufacturer.
  • Five (5) years’ collective experience in steel and aluminum welding, Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), silver brazing techniques, and as a skilled fabricator working extensively from blueprints on a broad range of projects.
  • Five (5) years’ experience using maritime specialty tools. Examples of relevant tools are torque wrenches, timing and fuel rack adjustment tools, feeler gauges, depth gauges, and snap gauges as part of the routine maintenance and equipment diagnostics processes.
  • Five (5) years’ collective experience using factory technical manuals, instructions, and publications to ensure repair procedures are in accordance with specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Performs organizational- and intermediate-level maintenance and Depot Level overhaul on all types of internal combustion engines.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on auxiliary equipment and small craft diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, and drive shafts.
  • Performs tracking of maintenance schedules and workload.
  • Reviews technical manuals, instructions, and specifications, providing recommendations for additions, deletions, and revisions.
  • Provides timely input to specifications for any commercial maintenance or repair packages to ensure that all required repairs are accurately described.
  • Ensures that all repairs are in accordance with specifications.
  • Assists with generation and submittal of required paperwork requesting permission from Naval Special Warfare Command (WARCOM) to operate the craft with repairs in place if repairs do not meet specifications.
  • Performs mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and engine power head and lower unit overhauls on 2 and 4-stroke outboard engines ranging in size from 30 to 350 horsepower and 470 horsepower diesel engines, along with equipment trailers.
  • Fabricates and fits tubing and flexible hose assemblies.
  • Monitors electrical charging and regulating systems.
  • Operates and maintains hydraulic equipment.
  • Controls or minimizes the effects of oil and fuel spills.
  • Completes maintenance data system forms.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance and repair on 25-foot aluminum defender class Safe craft, 25-foot Fiberglass Boston Whaler, 11m RHIB, 38-foot aluminum defender class Safe craft, and aluminum hulled mud boat to include repairs and maintenance on gauges, navigation equipment, and communication equipment that is specially designed for Special Operation Commands.
  • Performs organizational and intermediate level maintenance and overhauls on all types of internal combustion engines.
  • Starts and operates all types of internal combustion engines.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on auxiliary equipment, 7.5 KW generators, and on small craft diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, and drive shafts.
  • Overhauls internal combustion engines; adjusts valves, injectors, control racks, governor, and governor-control linkages on diesel engines; checks oil clearance in bearings; adjusts and tests diesel and gasoline engines; and operates and troubleshoots internal combustion engine blowers and turbochargers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on different kinds of small craft and manages and schedules preventive maintenance workload.
  • Conducts training in troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of craft.
  • Tracks hours, fuel, and maintenance costs as well as training, for civilians and active-duty military, for each craft assigned to SBTC.
  • Liaises between outboard engine, hulls, and trailer manufacturers in coordination with the assigned Government representative.
  • Researches and tracks repair parts for small craft.
  • Monitors warranties and submits claims for reimbursement of parts used on small craft from different manufacturers in coordination with the assigned Government representative.
  • Assists with maintaining a shop with all necessary tools and equipment and safety gear to perform maintenance and repair on small craft in coordination with the assigned Government representative.
  • Reviews all recurring engineering logs and records to identify potential trends and develop corrective action plans.
  • Conducts periodic craft and engine inspections and ensures that all discrepancies are documented and repaired.
