About The Position

Under general supervision of the Program Manager, the Skills Trainer is responsible for independent living skills training on a one-on-one basis. This role involves promoting and adhering to Supported Living Principles, including A Home of One's Own, Choice and Self-Directed, Relationships, Community Membership, and Flexible, Tailored Services and Supports. The trainer will assist in developing and implementing support service activities, independent living training, management plans, and supported living assessments. They will carry out specific skills training plans for participants, assist with personal care needs (toilet needs, feeding, and hygiene), and support participants with mobility and communication needs. The role also involves developing natural and community support, assisting in medical appointments and health needs, maintaining detailed documentation of services provided, and assisting with report preparation on participants. The Skills Trainer will participate in regular staff meetings and maintain appropriate communication with supervisor(s). Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess ability to read, write and understand English
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor
  • Knowledge and ability to work with basic mathematical concepts
  • Must have working knowledge of personal computers
  • Must possess a valid CDL and have clean driving record
  • Must operate a vehicle in good working order for employee transportation
  • Must have proof of ongoing auto insurance on personal vehicle
  • Is punctual and dependable
  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service
  • Must work in an ethical and professional manner
  • Has strong interpersonal skills that include responding well to supervision
  • Must be able to work collaboratively
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Must demonstrate respect and sensitivity to diversity
  • Must possess general knowledge of developmental and physical disabilities
  • Must possess general knowledge of individual/group instruction techniques
  • Must possess general knowledge of behavioral and medical knowledge associated with given disabilities such as seizure activity
  • Must possess general knowledge of practice of correct lifting, positioning and transferring techniques
  • Must possess general knowledge of behavior modification techniques
  • Must possess general knowledge of documentation procedures
  • Must have ability to remain calm in high stress situations
  • Must maintain First Aid/CPR certificates
  • Must be able to meet California Community Care Licensing personnel standards

Nice To Haves

  • Preference given to persons who have experience working in day or residential programs serving persons with disabilities
  • Working knowledge of personal computers is highly desirable
