About The Position

The Skills Specialist teaches, guides, instructs, and supports individuals with serious mental illness and/or substance use disorders to overcome barriers in various life domains related to their recovery. This role involves meeting clients where they are and coaching them to success by teaching essential skills such as self-advocacy, negotiation, problem-solving, goal setting, symptom management, recovery capital, daily living activities (e.g., housekeeping, cooking, cleaning, parenting), communication, coping mechanisms, financial/budgeting and money management, benefits management, vocational skills, identifying triggers to prevent relapse, community integration, and social/recreation/leisure skills.

  • Associate's degree or Two years of experience or two years of college coursework in related field may be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Obtain and maintain CANS/ANSA Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s level preferred
  • Minimum of two years professional experience working directly with adults or youth and families in a child welfare, school, childcare, criminal justice behavioral health or related setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Communicates client status with interdisciplinary team and referral sources.
  • Participate in team meetings for the discussion formulation of the treatment plan.
  • Complete clinical documentation that is accurate, meets organizational standards in composition and content, and is adequate for communication about client’s treatment and progress.
  • Completes authorizations paperwork for clients including ASAMs, Care Plans, CANS/ANSA’s and all documentation/assessments necessary for treatment specific to the program.
  • Complete clinical documentation within 24 hours of the service provided.
  • Uses structured, standardized interventions and resources for teaching to assist clients in overcoming barriers to recovery.
  • Provides individual and/or group interventions in the home, community or office setting.
  • Works within various community systems to collaborate on behalf of, and with, the client. Includes the criminal justice system, the child welfare system, hospital/medical systems, educational, etc.
  • Assesses and updates person-centered plan with the client and collaterals and monitors progress of the plan.
  • Ensures client’s clinical record is maintained and up to date at all times.
  • Submits reports to referral sources on clients participation and progress in treatment, where authorized.
