About The Position

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is seeking a Skilled Trades Instructor to provide academic leadership and develop an effective learning environment in program shops and classrooms. The Instructor will develop, deliver, and evaluate students within apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, and post-secondary skilled trades programs. This role requires performing all duties consistent with SNP's governance values and operating policies, fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community, and contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning, and work environment aligned with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Requirements

  • Completion of post-secondary college or university in Welding and/or Machinist, or a Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification for the program of instruction.
  • Over 3 years and including 5 years of experience in industry in welding or machining, including hands-on work with tools, equipment, and safety procedures in a skilled trades environment.
  • Experience in instructional delivery within post-secondary or apprenticeship programs, including curriculum development, student evaluation, and coordination of work placements.
  • Familiarity with administrative processes, record-keeping, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Must provide an original Criminal Background Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work.
  • Must provide an Offence Declaration satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and delivers curriculum aligned with Skills Trades Ontario and SNP learning objectives, including preparing lesson plans, instructional materials, and teaching both theory and practical skills in classroom and shop settings.
  • Develops course outlines and assignments to support learner progress and program requirements.
  • Demonstrates safe and proper use of tools and equipment, ensuring students follow all safety protocols.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Assesses student progress using various evaluation methods, maintains records, and provides academic support through consultation and referrals.
  • Submits evaluations and grades in accordance with program timelines and institutional requirements.
  • Tracks attendance and performance to ensure compliance with program expectations and to identify support needs.
  • Refers students to support services to promote learner success and retention.
  • Identifies, secures, and monitors student work placements that align with career goals and program standards.
  • Maintains employer relationships and supports students throughout their placements.
  • Conducts site visits to confirm suitability, ensure compliance with safety and program expectations, and monitor student progress.
  • Maintains placement records including employer information, student progress notes, and required documentation.
  • Supports students with placement-related challenges, providing guidance, problem-solving, and coordination with employers or support services as needed.
  • Supports day-to-day operations of the shop and program, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and input on scheduling and curriculum development.
  • Prepares purchase orders to ensure tools, supplies, and materials are available to meet instructional needs.
  • Reports equipment issues to ensure timely repairs and safe operation of all shop resources.
  • Advises on program needs, providing input on equipment upgrades, resource planning, and operational improvements that support program quality and delivery.
  • Participates in institutional activities, adheres to policies, and contributes to planning and reporting.
  • Supports events and collaborative initiatives across SNP by attending meetings and training, supporting orientation and annual celebration, and contributing to policy development.
