Under close supervision, performs a variety of construction, maintenance and repair duties relating to such crafts as electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and/or welding. This role involves performing maintenance and repair of all facility structures and equipment to HCSO standards, sometimes requiring hands-on assistance and supervision of outside contractors. The specialist works cooperatively with the Skilled Craftsman crew leader and support staff to complete projects, prepares and signs off on work reports, and maintains parts, equipment, tools, and supplies. They also help maintain the inventory of materials and equipment, and supervise inmate workforces assigned to the maintenance crew within correctional facilities, prioritizing safety and security. Tasks include assisting in and performing various construction projects and day-to-day breakdowns, involving trades such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, welding, grounds keeping, and general labor. Adherence to preventative maintenance schedules is crucial, and the specialist must ensure on-time starts and good attendance, facilitating immediate performance of tasks as they arise or are assigned. Open communication and prioritization of tasks based on crew leader or Facilities Manager direction are expected.
