About The Position

Under close supervision, performs a variety of construction, maintenance and repair duties relating to such crafts as electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and/or welding. This role involves performing maintenance and repair of all facility structures and equipment to HCSO standards, sometimes requiring hands-on assistance and supervision of outside contractors. The specialist works cooperatively with the Skilled Craftsman crew leader and support staff to complete projects, prepares and signs off on work reports, and maintains parts, equipment, tools, and supplies. They also help maintain the inventory of materials and equipment, and supervise inmate workforces assigned to the maintenance crew within correctional facilities, prioritizing safety and security. Tasks include assisting in and performing various construction projects and day-to-day breakdowns, involving trades such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, welding, grounds keeping, and general labor. Adherence to preventative maintenance schedules is crucial, and the specialist must ensure on-time starts and good attendance, facilitating immediate performance of tasks as they arise or are assigned. Open communication and prioritization of tasks based on crew leader or Facilities Manager direction are expected.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years of experience in building trades or a comparable amount of training in a vocational school with emphasis on building trades and construction.
Valid Driver’s license.
Ability to be on call as needed.
Ability to lift or carry at least seventy (70) pounds.
Must provide a complete and thorough employment history, from leaving high school to the present date (both full and part time).
Must attach a copy of high school diploma or transcript, driver’s license and social security card to the application.
If military experience, must provide a copy of Member-4 copy of DD214 discharge document (must indicate 'honorable' separation).

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Performs the maintenance and repair of all facility structures and equipment.
Provides hands-on assistance and supervision of outside contractors for tasks not handled in-house.
Works cooperatively with the Skilled Craftsman crew leader and support staff to complete projects.
Prepares and signs off on work reports concerning types of repairs made, materials used, and cost of completed work assignments.
Maintains parts, equipment, tools, and supplies and practices good stewardship of HCSO funds and assets.
Helps maintain the inventory of materials and equipment purchased and requested.
Supervises the inmate workforce assigned to the maintenance crew for any task inside a correctional facility, keeping in mind the safety and security of all HCSO staff and the general public.
Assists in and performs various construction projects and day-to-day breakdowns.
Performs repairs involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, welding, grounds keeping, and other general labor.
Ensures preventative maintenance schedules are met for facilities and equipment.
Ensures on-time starts to work and good attendance.
Facilitates the immediate performance of tasks at the start of each day and as items arise or are assigned.
Receives assignments and tasks from crew leaders and co-workers, prioritizing the most important tasks.
Troubleshoots and repairs issues with HCSO facilities and equipment.
Plans, organizes, and completes multiple, unrelated simultaneous projects.
Estimates materials and time required for various jobs.
