About The Position

Fred Smith Company is searching for a Site Safety Specialist. We are a self-perform heavy civil contractor working in North Carolina. The Safety Specialist is accountable to the Safety Director for the satisfactory completion of all assigned duties and safety regulations as mandated to include but not limited to Fred Smith Company, OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and DOL.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of construction safety/current Federal and OSHA requirements is required
  • Working field knowledge including: Heavy Highway and Bridge Construction, Crane Operations, Asphalt Plant and Lay down Activities, along with various other grade and utility construction preferred
  • Effective writing and communication skills required
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record required
  • One to three years of experience in a Safety or comparable role
  • Highly detail oriented and organized in work.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and computer database function

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Safety Professional is a plus
  • Demonstrated performance as a safety professional (professional memberships and/or certifications)
  • Ability to converse in basic Spanish
  • Applicable field experience outside the safety profession will be highly considered
  • CHST and/or OSHA 500 certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to Safety Director in designing safety protocols.
  • Performs thorough post incident investigation to ensure that all required policies were followed and identify areas of improvement.
  • Performs project safety inspections and audits, and effectively communicates identified hazards, safety goals and expectations with field employees.
  • Initiate and implement safety measures in work areas.
  • Inspect work area premises for hazardous elements.
  • Educate workers and employees on safety aspects.
  • Assist in the coordination and arrangement of training and education programs.
  • Assists the Safety Director in preparing safety manuals and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with departmental heads in implementing safety processes.
  • Possess an understanding of regulatory record keeping requirements and safety administrative procedures.
  • Strictly adhere to corporate safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by Safety Director.
