About The Position

Optimum is seeking a Network IP Engineer with a reliability mindset to join its Core Network team. This mid-level, hands-on engineering role maintains and expands the IP backbone and cloud infrastructure, bridging physical hardware—primarily Juniper, Cisco, and Arista—with Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The role supports a transition from manual CLI configurations to automated, resilient, and observable network operations across on-premises and cloud environments. The engineer configures, deploys, and troubleshoots physical IP core and cloud infrastructure; responds to complex network incidents; builds and operates automation; improves network observability; and plans maintenance activities with an emphasis on minimizing downtime. The position works with technologies including Juniper Junos, Arista EOS, Cisco IOS XE and NX-OS, GCP networking services, routing and overlay protocols, Python, Ansible, Terraform, and Git.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with hardware CLIs, including Juniper Junos and/or Arista EOS.
  • Working knowledge of GCP cloud-native networking concepts, including VPC architecture, firewall rules, and cloud routing.
  • Deep understanding of the TCP/IP stack, subnetting, and core routing protocols, specifically BGP and OSPF.
  • Ability to trace a packet from source to destination and identify where it is dropped, using tools such as ping, traceroute, tcpdump, Wireshark, or VPC Flow Logs.
  • Comfort working in a Linux shell environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Google Cloud Professional Cloud Network Engineer or Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer certification; highly preferred.
  • JNCIA or JNCIS, Arista ACE-A/ACE-P/ACE-E, or Cisco CCNA/CCNP certification.
  • Basic Python scripting or experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Ansible and Terraform for network automation.
  • Familiarity with Juniper Cloud Management & AIOps (MistAI) and/or Arista EOS and CloudVision.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and troubleshoot infrastructure across the physical IP core, including Juniper MX/PTX/QFX, Cisco Catalyst/Nexus, and Arista 5000/7000, and GCP environments, including VPCs, subnets, Cloud Routers, and Cloud Load Balancing.
  • Investigate complex network issues, including routing anomalies, packet loss, and latency, using a blameless root-cause analysis approach across physical links and cloud perimeters such as Cloud VPN and Dedicated Interconnect.
  • Build and run Python scripts, Ansible playbooks, and Terraform configurations to automate deployments, validate changes, and audit the hybrid network.
  • Tune monitoring tools such as Grafana and standard NMS, and use GCP Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, and Network Intelligence Center to detect issues before they affect customers.
  • Plan and execute network maintenance windows, including firmware upgrades, hardware replacements, and cloud architecture migrations, while minimizing downtime.
