About The Position

Fairweather is seeking a Site Caretaker for a remote role on the North Slope of Alaska. This position involves maintaining and monitoring pre-stage areas in West Harrison Bay during the shoulder season and early winter. The role requires self-sufficiency, comfort with extended remote deployment, and experience with the practicalities of working in arctic Alaska. The caretakers will be the primary presence on-site, supporting a client's exploration project which includes staging camps, drilling, and construction. Responsibilities include routine site monitoring, equipment checks, minor repairs, fuel transfers, snow management, and early-season pre-packing. Two caretakers will be on-site, working together and supporting visiting specialists. Resupply is expected weekly.

Requirements

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a similar position in a remote setting.
  • Valid North Slope NSTC unescorted certification.
  • Comfortable regularly lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds unassisted.
  • Experience with thermistors and temperature monitoring in permafrost or arctic environments.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated experience working and living in remote arctic environments for extended periods (minimum of 2–3 weeks at a time).
  • Proficiency operating snow machines, PistenBully, Tucker Sno-Cat, inflatable skiff, or similar small machinery.
  • Competence in minor mechanical and basic electrical repairs.
  • Self-sufficient, practical, and calm under pressure; able to manage day-to-day field challenges independently.

  • Experience with wildlife monitoring or IHA compliance protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor pre-stage areas (Kogru River barge mooring area and airstrip / DEW line site) for equipment condition, camps, fuel caches, and barges.
  • Check thermistors along pre-packing routes using tundra-approved vehicles and maintain as necessary.
  • Check construction, rig, and auxiliary equipment for good order, monitoring for settling, movement, or wildlife interactions.
  • Monitor tank farms for unexpected fuel releases and report/respond promptly.
  • Monitor all areas for wildlife and respond according to the client's IHA, documenting all observations.
  • Maintain presence across relevant project areas, including pre-staging locations, onshore ice road corridors, banks, and nominated freshwater lakes.
  • Execute fuel transfers to site equipment per established procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on equipment with deficiencies, with remote specialist advice.
  • Clear snow from critical equipment and set snow fences as conditions require.
  • Provide regular update reports to client management on equipment status, site conditions, and emerging issues.
  • Support visiting specialist personnel on-site, including transportation and general field support.
  • Work alongside other caretakers and contractor personnel professionally.
  • Represent client and Fairweather professionally and courteously.
  • Perform own cooking and housekeeping duties; maintain camp in an orderly and presentable condition.
  • Follow procedures for storage of food and trash to deter wildlife.
  • Assist in completing early-season preparation tasks such as stringing runway lights, basic camp maintenance, clearing snow from critical equipment, commencing warm-up plan execution, clearing a snow runway, and conducting basic pre-packing of ice trails.
