About The Position

Facilitate the daily operations of the Keigwin School of Nursing (KSON) Simulation Training and Applied Research (STAR) Center, Clinical Skills Lab, and the Jacksonville University Healthcare Simulation Center (HSC) under the direction of the STAR, Clinical Skills Lab, and HSC Director. The simulation centers and clinical skills lab are environments that support critical thinking and experiential learning experiences for KSON students, Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences (BRCHS) students, and community partners. The simulationist/lab instructor will ensure the delivery of clinical simulation experiences, instruction, and the operation of manikin simulators or standardized patients (SPs) to be used effectively in healthcare education and training.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Technologically inclined and proficient in Microsoft applications
  • Familiar with the healthcare environment and operations, proficient in medical terminology, and well-versed in nursing clinical practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Innovative Best Practice simulation curriculum development, implementation, and use of simulation technology.
  • Ability to evaluate learners in the teaching/learning simulation lab environment.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching techniques and curriculum development.
  • Facilitate the development of learner problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the simulation team, Jacksonville University faculty and staff, and interdisciplinary community partners.
  • May travel between campus buildings or off-campus.
  • Able to work with self-initiative and autonomy.

Nice To Haves

  • Simulation experience preferred.
  • A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Medical Surgical, Emergency, Critical Care, Progressive Care Experience.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • AHA Instructor preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator preferred or a desire to work towards it.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of the STAR, Skills, and HSC Centers, KSON faculty, BRCHS faculty, and community partners to maximize the utilization of clinical learning in simulation centers
  • Collaborate and implement current evidence-based practice in simulation learning set by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL)
  • Organize and execute the set-up and breakdown of equipment, supplies, and materials for scheduled courses and simulations in the lab and classrooms. This includes standardized patient moulage, briefing pre-simulation, debriefing post-simulation, and integrating guided reflection as needed
  • Lead skill demonstrations, reinforcing classroom theory content in collaboration with faculty
  • Evaluate students' learning and skill acquisition at the discretion of faculty
  • Work with faculty to plan and execute the remediation process to meet assigned course learning objectives. Communicate student outcomes and any related recommendations to faculty
  • Develop and create ways to enhance learning in the lab, such as facilitating open lab for clinical practice, lunch and learns, and other coordinated activities
  • Collect and analyze lab survey responses for assigned courses to determine the effectiveness of simulation on student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making.
  • Discuss findings with the STAR, Skills, and HSC Centers Director and faculty course coordinator for potential improvements.
  • Provide for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratory. Appropriate disposal of hazardous materials for OSHA standards.
  • Manage and direct the operation of manikin simulators and Standardized Patients (SPs) to facilitate their use in healthcare education and training
  • Engage and facilitate faculty & community partner development in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating new courses, simulation scenarios, simulation tools, and other educational initiatives to promote and measure student learning outcomes
  • Communicate and collaborate in a positive, professional manner with faculty, simulationists, and IT operation specialists
  • Collaborate with Simulation Operations and IT specialists to maintain, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to the operation and maintenance of simulation equipment.
  • Participate in grant and contractual-related activities as designated by the Director of STAR, Skills, and HSC Centers
  • If certified as an AHA instructor, Train & facilitate the operation of the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center (or other designated agency) to provide various AHA including but not limited to First Aid, BLS (Basic Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) & ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) training for community partners & services.
  • Remain current with developments in the field of simulation technology and learning theory.
  • Participate in professional development and attend professional meetings and conferences
  • Attend regularly scheduled JU KSON meetings and activities as appropriate
  • Participate in simulation meetings for the STAR Center, Skills Lab, and HSC as needed
  • Participate in KSON organization committee(s)
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for students in the lab
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
