About The Position

Under the direction of the Traffic Control Division Coordinator, the Signal Technician I, II or III performs work as directed for the installation, maintenance and repair of signals, lighting, etc. for which the department is responsible. This role involves working with various traffic signal software applications, testing electrical and electronic equipment, and operating specialized vehicles. The position requires on-call availability and may involve night work. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class B minimum) with a clean driving record
  • Must work overtime, and be on standby or on-call as directed
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to apply understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Ability to compile routine reports
  • Must be able to accurately convey and perceive information in communication situations
  • Must be able to perceive, inspect, and assess safety and maintenance instructions to execute essential maintenance and installation duties
  • Must be able to distinguish colors, depths and details to ensure safe and accurate lighting installation and maintenance
  • Must be able to move objects up to 100 pounds, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina
  • Signal Technician I: Completed requirements for Signal Technician I.
  • Signal Technician II: Completed requirements for Signal Technician I.
  • Signal Technician II: Two years of experience as a Bucket Truck Operator or two years’ experience working in traffic signals and street lighting.
  • Signal Technician III: Completed requirements for Signal Technician I & II.
  • Signal Technician III: Five years of experience working in traffic signals and street lighting.
  • Signal Technician III: Two years of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains and repairs traffic signals, intelligent traffic systems, street lighting, school zones and other departmental equipment
  • Utilizes a laptop for various traffic signal software applications
  • Tests electrical and electronic equipment, including traffic signal heads, streetlights, controllers, auxiliary equipment, and other systems to ensure they operate as intended
  • Operates and inspects Traffic Division Aerial Tower Trucks as directed
  • Inspects and assesses work areas to determine type of work required and materials and equipment needed
  • May operate a lift or bucket truck, auger truck, forklift or trencher under the general direction of a higher-level technician or supervisor
  • Confers with other supervisors to coordinate vehicles and heavy equipment required for task completion
  • Maintains assigned vehicle in a clean and orderly fashion
  • Participates in traffic division field operations as required
  • Completes field reports and other service related paperwork that may include time and materials used, failure/repair data, and follow-up actions that may be required
  • Performs inspections and preventive maintenance work on traffic signals by replacing defective equipment, including poles and other electrical systems, as necessary
  • Ensures that all new level I employees can properly maintain and repair small problems in cabinets and safely operate the bucket truck
  • Provides guidance, support, and training to lower-level techs for entry-level duties and assists crews as needed
  • Directs and coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in the servicing and repair of traffic signals, school zones and street lighting by performing duties directly or through subordinate employees
  • Investigates complaints and reports of signal malfunctions to determine corrective action and assigns work accordingly
  • Oversees the scheduling and daily operations of the signal technicians
  • Assists signal technicians in diagnosing malfunctions in traffic signals, school zones, street lighting and associated equipment and inspects completed work
  • Reviews completed work orders to ensure all data is correct
  • Maintains warehouse, assists Operations Assistant in ordering materials, reviews inventories and monitors usage of materials
  • Oversees contracted repair services and new contracted services work; determines equipment needed for repair, properly identifies and marks equipment for outgoing repairs
  • Performs personnel evaluations of subordinates
  • Assists in the Traffic Management Control operations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
