About The Position

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is seeking a Signal Maintainer Trainee to assist with the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of railroad signal systems that control train movements and protect highway grade crossings. Trainees work alongside experienced Signal Maintainers and receive on the job training in railroad signal systems and related electrical equipment.

Requirements

  • Must join the appropriate union and pay union dues after the applicable training period.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintaining, testing, and repairing railroad signal systems
  • Inspect and test signal circuitry and battery systems
  • Replace wiring, relays, lenses, light bulbs, and other electrical components
  • Install, test, and maintain grade crossing warning devices, power switches, and other signal equipment
  • Assist with signal construction, installation, maintenance, and repair projects
  • Clean, lubricate, and inspect signal equipment
  • Use hand tools and electrical testing equipment
  • Perform general labor duties related to signal maintenance
