About The Position

The Sign Marking Specialist/Electrical Technician performs a combination of electrical, sign fabrication, installation, pavement marking, and equipment maintenance work. You will work in the shop and throughout the City installing and maintaining the signs, markings, lighting, and related equipment drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists rely on every day.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation, supplemented by electrical coursework.
  • Three years of experience in electrical wiring, maintenance, and sign-related work.
  • Ability to safely work around moving traffic, at elevated heights, and in changing outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, twist, climb, and regularly lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Valid Indiana driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain an Indiana Class B Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of employment. The employee must be at least 21 years old to hold a CDL with the City of Fort Wayne.
  • Ability to obtain IMSA Work Zone and Signs and Markings Level II certifications within 12 months, at the discretion of management.
  • Working knowledge of electricity, electrical wiring, sign lighting, ballasts, and sign installation principles.
  • Ability to identify and resolve electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment problems in the shop or field.
  • Ability to understand technical instructions, measurements, diagrams, fractions, percentages, ratios, geometry, and basic trigonometry.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with coworkers, other City departments, outside agencies, and members of the public.
  • Commitment to following established safety procedures, particularly when working around traffic, overhead installations, machinery, chemicals, and hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installing, repairing, and replacing internally illuminated signs, traffic signals, and street lighting.
  • Fabricate, assemble, paint, install, repair, and maintain street signs, including overhead signs, River greenway signs, and the downtown banner system.
  • Apply and maintain pavement markings, including crosswalks, traffic lanes, arrows, stop bars, railroad crossings, curbs, and parking stalls.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools and equipment; perform welding, cutting, and other skilled shop and field work.
  • Operate lift platforms, bucket trucks, forklifts, front-end loaders, air hammers, grinders, and other specialized equipment while setting up work zones, directing traffic, completing documentation, and maintaining an organized work area.
