About The Position

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is seeking an SLPI Interviewer/Rater to join their team. This role is crucial for ensuring high-quality, accessible communication across the organization by interviewing and rating applicants and staff members according to the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) standards. The position involves analyzing linguistic skills, collaborating with the SLPI team on scores, and writing comprehensive reports that impact professional development and organizational excellence. AIDB is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program for individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind, and multi-disabled, and their families.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years working with individuals who are Deaf or DeafBlind using American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Possess a sign language proficiency evaluation of ADVANCED PLUS upon employment.
  • Must meet suitability/background requirements for employment.
  • Must actively participate in and successfully pass the official SLPI Interviewer/Rater training program.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
  • Possess thorough, advanced knowledge and hands-on experience using American Sign Language (ASL).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields.
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching ASL or working with ASL students.
  • Already trained to be a SLPI Interviewer/Rater.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct live interviews with candidates and perform thorough video-recorded analyses to evaluate their sign language proficiency using the SLPI rating system.
  • Work closely and communicate effectively with the SLPI rating team and the SLPI Coordinator to align on scheduling, review processes, and finalized rating scores.
  • Efficiently manage timelines to complete candidate ratings and submit final documentation to the SLPI Coordinator within established deadlines.
  • Analyze linguistic skills.
  • Collaborate on final scores.
  • Write comprehensive reports.
