About The Position

The Shredder Manager (SM) reports directly to the General Manager. They oversee production, maintenance, and quality control for the shredding department. Assigns daily duties for equipment operators, pickers, and cleaners for whom he/she has responsibility for. Assists NF Recovery Manager, Recycling Operations FE Manager, Maintenance Manager, Environmental Manager and facility and Commercial teams with issues pertaining to optimizing physical plant operations. Maintains a safe work environment and assists with training employees on safety procedures. This position operates within somewhat flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the shredder production operation. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5-10 years of manufacturing work experience.
  • 2-5 years of managerial experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of manufacturing processes required.
  • Prior experience managing and leading a work crew is necessary.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Successful candidate will have previously been involved with continuous improvement initiatives with documented success.
  • Must exhibit analytical skills to manage production metrics and implement new technologies.
  • Must have experience managing a departmental budget, justifying capital expenditures and measuring return on investment.
  • Ability and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Maintenance background preferred.
  • Previous exposure to working within a unionized environment is a plus.
  • Spanish speaking helpful but not necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee production, maintenance, and quality control for the shredding department.
  • Assign daily duties for equipment operators, pickers, and cleaners.
  • Assist with issues pertaining to optimizing physical plant operations.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and assist with training employees on safety procedures.
  • Ensure safe work practices and equipment are always used and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with corporate safety policies, OSHA, and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide a safe environment for all customers at the shredder.
  • Create Health & Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with safety leaders.
  • Ensure all department employees receive timely safety and operational training and that the appropriate documents are prepared.
  • Maintain employee files per regional practice.
  • Assign an employee to be on the Safety Committee and personally attend Safety Committee meetings on rotation with other managers.
  • Monitor safety program to reduce accident frequency within department, implement new safety ideas/procedures and establish safety goals.
  • Understand and monitor the regulatory environment as it affects this department and our relationship with the regulatory agencies.
  • Provide leadership to department employees on multiple shifts.
  • Assign work schedule for employees under his/her direct supervision to run efficiently at optimal production rates, with minimal overtime.
  • Act as a Shredder Committee member.
  • Act as a backup Shredder Operator in emergency situations.
  • Review repair and maintenance needs with the Plant Manager and Maintenance Manager.
  • Determine necessary parts to order and lead times needed to maintain efficient and effective functioning of equipment.
  • Provide management with a 6-month general plan which describes scheduled repairs, upgrades, and major projects.
  • Schedule for major projects including manpower, equipment, downtime, and timeline.
  • Manage spare components and wear parts inventory.
  • Issue, track and reorder inventory stores.
  • Ensure processing and storage of finished goods is done in compliance with internal controls.
  • Implement and maintain an effective, documented Quality Control program focusing on a strong relationship with Commercial and Sales departments.
  • Work with internal and customer specs for materials.
  • Ensure that reports of any off grade/ off spec materials are discussed with supervisor prior to shipment to eliminate consumer quality complaints, avoid downgrades, and eliminate claims.
  • Prepare and monitor daily production reports to continuously improve throughput, reduce costs/expenses, and increase profitability and maximum metal recovery.
  • Implement operational goals based on monthly projections set by management.
  • Monitor and maintain exempt and/or hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
  • Monitor supervisory practices for self and direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts, as applicable.
  • Review performance of direct reports.
  • Interview prospective management and/or production employees.
  • Work with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.
  • Perform special projects or other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Support the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
  • Communicate upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
  • Directly supervise Shredder Operations employees on multiple shifts.

Benefits

  • Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000/year
