This position involves administering and supervising the maintenance and repair of County fleet vehicles and light and heavy equipment, administering the County fuels program, and supervising assigned employees. The work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Public Works Director, with supervision exercised over mechanics and shop support staff. The principal duties are performed in an automotive shop environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, power tools and equipment, and related hazards. Key responsibilities include administering the fleet vehicle and light and heavy equipment maintenance, repair, and inspection program, as well as the fuel management program. The supervisor is responsible for scheduling and assigning vehicle and equipment maintenance tasks, ensuring work assignments comply with safety and maintenance standards, and overseeing purchasing and inventory control of spare parts, tools, equipment, and supplies. The role also encompasses supervising, training, and evaluating employees, implementing and maintaining periodic maintenance schedules for vehicles and equipment, and administering shop safety and training programs. The supervisor oversees the maintenance of the shop building, equipment, communications system, tools, and supplies, and assists with bid specifications and equipment replacement recommendations. They inspect newly purchased County vehicles and equipment, and supervise and perform high-level maintenance, troubleshooting, safety inspections, and repair work on all fleet vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and industrial equipment (both gas and diesel). This includes overseeing fabrication, alteration, and welding, and performing inspections and repairs on various systems such as hydraulic, drive trains, transmissions, suspensions, steering, heating and air conditioning, ventilation, and emissions. The supervisor also implements and administers an oil sample program, troubleshoots and repairs sophisticated emergency equipment, and supervises vehicle body repairs, painting, and touchup work, determining when outside vendors are needed. Planning preventive maintenance schedules, maintaining vehicle records, providing emergency field service to disabled vehicles, and maintaining a neat, clean, and tidy shop and work area are also part of the role. All duties must be performed in accordance with County policies, procedures, safety practices, and automotive industry standards. Additionally, the supervisor may supervise road crews in the absence of the Field Supervisor, be on call for emergency situations including snow removal, and be assigned to perform duties with Department crews.
