About The Position

As our next Shop Manager, you’ll oversee maintenance operations across multiple SCA locations in Virginia, ensuring our fleet remains safe, reliable, and ready to serve the communities that depend on us. You’ll lead and develop shop teams, coordinate maintenance priorities across locations, monitor fleet readiness, and partner closely with Branch and Operations leadership to minimize downtime and keep equipment moving. This role requires a strong combination of shop leadership, mechanical knowledge, organization, communication, and accountability. You’ll establish priorities, monitor work orders and repairs, help resolve complex maintenance issues, and ensure each location has the resources and support needed to maintain a safe and productive shop operation.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
5+ years of experience in a diesel, heavy equipment, fleet maintenance, or similar shop environment, with demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.
Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air systems, and heavy equipment.
Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and hold maintenance employees accountable for performance, safety, quality, and productivity.
Valid Driver’s License required
Working knowledge of common shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance systems.
Ability and willingness to travel between multiple Virginia locations as needed.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must maintain an acceptable driving record and successfully pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check, background check, DOT physical, and drug screening in accordance with Company policy and applicable law.

Nice To Haves

Experience overseeing maintenance operations across multiple locations is preferred.
Experience with sweepers, trucks, waste, recycling, or environmental services equipment preferred.
CDL preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership and oversight for maintenance operations across multiple Virginia locations. Establish priorities, monitor shop performance, and ensure consistent maintenance practices across locations.
Partner with Operations and Branch leadership to ensure sweepers, trucks, and other equipment are properly maintained, repaired, inspected, and available to support daily operations. Identify recurring equipment issues and develop plans to reduce downtime.
Lead, coach, and develop mechanics, shop helpers, and other maintenance personnel. Set clear expectations, provide feedback, support training, and hold team members accountable for safety, productivity, quality, and attendance.
Review and prioritize work orders, preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs based on operational needs and equipment condition. Ensure repairs are completed efficiently and accurately.
Use strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air systems, and heavy equipment to support troubleshooting and repair decisions. Assist teams with complex or difficult maintenance issues when needed.
Ensure each shop has the appropriate tools, equipment, parts, supplies, and resources needed to operate effectively. Identify resource gaps and coordinate with leadership to address them.
Coordinate with parts suppliers, vendors, and service providers as needed. Monitor parts availability, outside repairs, and associated costs to support timely and cost-effective maintenance.
Lead by example in maintaining a safe work environment. Ensure equipment inspections, maintenance procedures, and shop practices are completed in accordance with Company safety standards and applicable regulations.
Monitor maintenance records, work orders, inspections, repair status, and other required documentation. Provide regular updates to leadership regarding fleet condition, major repairs, downtime, staffing needs, and other maintenance concerns.
Monitor maintenance expenses, outside repair costs, parts usage, and other shop-related expenditures. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining safe and reliable equipment.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with Branch Managers, Operations Managers, District Fleet Managers, mechanics, equipment operators, and other stakeholders regarding maintenance priorities and fleet needs.
Ensure shop operations follow Company policies, safety procedures, environmental requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Maintain accurate records and promptly address compliance concerns.
Respond effectively to unexpected breakdowns, staffing challenges, equipment issues, and changing operational priorities. Travel between locations as needed to provide support and maintain consistent shop operations.
