About The Position

The Mechanic Assistant is an entry-level position responsible for supporting technicians with the maintenance, service, and repair of heavy-duty trailers and related equipment. This role performs basic service tasks, assists experienced technicians with repairs, maintains a safe and organized work environment, and develops the technical knowledge and skills necessary to progress within the service organization. This position is ideal for an individual who is mechanically inclined, dependable, and interested in developing a career as a heavy-duty truck and trailer technician. Prior professional mechanic experience is not required.

Requirements

  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning heavy-duty truck and trailer maintenance and repair.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling parts.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic computer skills for inventory tracking.
  • Dependable attendance and willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and quality work.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy items up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop conditions.
  • Comfortable operating machinery and handling materials safely.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in warehouse or shop operations preferred.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and other warehouse equipment (certification is a plus).

Responsibilities

  • Assist technicians with the inspection, maintenance, service, and repair of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Perform basic maintenance and service tasks within demonstrated skill level and under appropriate direction.
  • Assist with removing, installing, and replacing components and parts as directed.
  • Gather and prepare tools, parts, equipment, and materials needed to complete service work.
  • Support mechanics during diagnostic and repair activities while developing knowledge of repair procedures and equipment.
  • Follow work instructions, repair procedures, and mechanic or supervisor direction to complete assigned tasks accurately.
  • Assist with or perform basic preventive maintenance activities.
  • Inspect equipment for visible wear, damage, leaks, or other potential concerns and communicate findings to the appropriate mechanic or supervisor.
  • Learn to identify common components and understand their basic functions.
  • Complete assigned service activities according to established quality and safety standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Clean and properly store tools and equipment after use.
  • Assist with moving vehicles, equipment, parts, and materials within the service facility as authorized.
  • Support general shop activities necessary to maintain an efficient service operation.
  • Properly handle and dispose of fluids, materials, and waste in accordance with company procedures and applicable requirements.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and required personal protective equipment practices.
  • Use tools, equipment, lifts, jacks, and other shop equipment only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings and immediately report unsafe conditions or damaged equipment.
  • Complete assigned work carefully and accurately to support safe, quality repairs.
  • Ask questions and seek guidance when performing unfamiliar tasks or when additional instruction is needed.
