About The Position

United Steel Fabrication LLC is seeking an experienced Shop Foreman / Shop Superintendent to lead daily operations in a structural steel fabrication shop. This role is responsible for organizing shop work, planning production, coordinating personnel and equipment, maintaining quality and safety standards, and helping establish consistent standard work methods across the shop. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong structural steel fabrication experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to plan work in a way that keeps projects moving efficiently from material receiving through fabrication, welding, finishing, and shipment.

Requirements

  • Experience in a structural steel fabrication shop is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple jobs at once, and keep crews productive.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and enforce standard work methods, procedures, and expectations.
  • Quality-minded with attention to detail.
  • Safety-focused and willing to maintain high shop standards.
  • Basic computer skills are preferred, especially for production tracking, scheduling, or documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior foreman, superintendent, lead person, or shop management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication processes, including fitting, welding, layout, material handling, and shop sequencing.
  • Experience with AISC quality requirements, welding procedures, or fabrication standards is a plus.
  • Organized, proactive, and comfortable taking ownership of shop performance.
  • Able to look ahead, prepare crews for upcoming work, reduce confusion, and create repeatable systems that improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Respected on the shop floor, able to communicate clearly, and willing to lead by example.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, organize, and supervise daily shop operations for structural steel fabrication.
  • Plan and coordinate work schedules, manpower, equipment, material flow, and shop priorities.
  • Review shop drawings, cut lists, production requirements, and project schedules to prepare work for fabrication.
  • Assign work to fitters, welders, machine operators, material handlers, and other shop personnel.
  • Monitor production progress and adjust priorities as needed to meet project deadlines.
  • Help develop, document, and implement standard work methods for shop processes.
  • Improve consistency, productivity, quality, safety, and accountability across fabrication operations.
  • Ensure work is completed according to drawings, specifications, weld procedures, and company quality standards.
  • Coordinate with project managers, detailers, purchasing, shipping, quality control, and management.
  • Identify material shortages, drawing issues, production conflicts, or bottlenecks early and communicate solutions.
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain a clean, organized, professional shop environment.
  • Coach, train, and hold team members accountable for performance, attendance, quality, and safety.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to layout, workflow, production tracking, tools, equipment, and standard procedures.
