About The Position

Venture Dynamics is seeking an experienced Shipyard Safety Manager to provide health and safety oversight across Navy and commercial ship repair operations. The Shipyard Safety Manager enforces compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations while serving as the primary safety resource for production trades working aboard vessels, in dry docks, and throughout active shipyard environments. This role operates with minimal supervision and is responsible for daily inspections, hazard mitigation, incident investigation, and safety training. This role is offered on a contract basis, with strong potential for long-term or permanent placement based on performance and client need.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Safety Inspector or equivalent in an industrial, shipyard, or ship repair environment; bachelor's degree in a related EHS field, or an associate's degree plus 5 years of directly related experience may substitute.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1915 (Shipyard Employment) and 29 CFR 1910 regulations.
  • Must hold current certifications in the following: OSHA 5410 (Maritime Industry Standards), OSHA 3115 (Fall Protection), OSHA 3095 (Electrical Standards), OSHA 521 (Industrial Hygiene), and Shipyard Competent Person Certificate as defined by 29 CFR 1915 (NAVSEA Standard Item 009-07).
  • Ability to perform as a Competent Person for confined space entry and hot work authorization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with production supervision and management.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be able to access government and military facilities.
  • Ability to pass background screening and drug testing per customer requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain base access credentials (DBIDS) as required by the military installation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting NAVSEA Standard Items and Navy ship repair contract requirements.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001:2018 or equivalent occupational health and safety management systems.
  • Additional certifications in HAZWOPER, EPA RCRA, DOT HAZMAT, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily safety walk-throughs aboard vessels, in dry docks, and throughout facility grounds to identify hazards and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Perform atmospheric testing, breathing air surveillance, and Grade D breathing air testing as required.
  • Inspect scaffolding systems prior to daily work commencement and conduct spot checks on industrial lift equipment for licensing and ODCL completion.
  • Perform confined space entry evaluations and authorize hot work as a Permit Authorized Individual in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Items.
  • Maintain SDS/MSDS documentation, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, and PPE dispensing stations.
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations, determine root cause, and develop corrective action recommendations.
  • Develop and deliver toolbox training, safety briefings, and site-specific training materials; maintain all training records.
  • Prepare written inspection reports, incident documentation, and statistical safety data as required by site management.
