The Estimator / Project Manager develops detailed estimates for shipyard projects and repairs by calculating labor, engineering, material, and other direct costs to determine total project cost. This position is responsible for preparing complete and accurate job books and managing the pre-arrival process to achieve a consistent and predictable start schedule.

Requirements

  • Familiar with working in the ship repair industry
  • Ability to read and understand ship blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to analyze information, develop a budget and present cost reports and related information.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is required
  • Excellent analytical and math skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • General knowledge of commercial marine vessels
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Project) etc.
  • Understanding of marine classification society rules, USCG, and regulatory requirements
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a positive, dependable attitude.
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Ability to travel on short notice
  • Ability to work weekends and overtime when required

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed labor and material estimates for shipyard/shop work and repairs to be accomplished on Government and Commercial vessels including general cargo, containers, tankers, bulk carriers, tugs, offshore supply vessels, and barges using drawings and specifications as well as on-site ship checks to identify access, interference, and other potential issues that need to be accounted for.
  • Maintain master purchase orders, options, and product pricing to ensure estimates are accurate and current.
  • Correct existing job books when variances impact production schedules.
  • Work closely with Production to ensure all required information is accurately represented in job books and project documentation.
  • Prepare Bid Response Letter to be sent to the customers.
  • Manage and complete job book files on assigned deadlines.
  • Generate purchase orders and update master suppliers and subcontractors list.
  • Track ongoing work and repairs to improve labor-hour and material estimating accuracy by reviewing cost reports and purchase order data, conducting on-site observations, and working directly with key Production personnel.
  • Prepare work breakdown structures to support proposal submittals and establish an execution approach for work requirements with project and production.
  • Complete miscellaneous assignments as requested.
