About The Position

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) is seeking a Shipwright Educator to provide mentorship and program oversight for its Shipwright Apprentices. This role involves instructing and training apprentices in historic boatbuilding, maintenance, and repair, working alongside CBMM's Shipwrights on various vessel projects. The Shipwright Educator will also develop and instruct adult educational programming, delivering at least four classes annually. This position is part of the Vessel Conservation team and requires the individual to be an effective shipwright throughout the year, contributing to the museum's mission of exploring and preserving the history, environment, and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years' experience in traditional wooden boat construction and/or restoration.
Experience managing a boat build or restoration project and managing a crew.
Formal boat building education background.
Teaching or education experience.
Proficiency in the use and maintenance of wood shop machinery.
Ability to read, interpret, and build vessels from drawings.
Comfortable organizing and managing multiple activities and projects simultaneously.
Experience managing team members at various skill levels.
Good communication skills with the aptitude to teach and mentor.
Comfortable building in full public view and interpreting to museum patrons daily.
Proficiency in use and maintenance of wood shop stationary machinery and power hand tools.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

Manage the Shipwright Apprentice Program, including monitoring apprentice development and leading curriculum development.
Plan and coordinate apprentice time allocation for curriculum compliance and shipyard activities.
Select, manage, develop, and evaluate Shipwright apprentices.
Provide hands-on training and oversight to apprentices, working alongside them and the Conservation Shipwright.
Support the evaluation and oversight of apprentice housing rules and requirements, and report maintenance needs.
Perform vessel construction/service tasks as determined by the Vessel Conservation Manager.
Participate in the regular cleaning and maintenance of the shipyard, focusing on safety and its role as a public exhibit.
Train apprentices in creating a positive guest experience through daily interaction and interpretation.
Assist in the development and management of an annual departmental budget.
Support the shipyard administrative team with DOL apprenticeship documentation, reports, and audits.
Develop, prepare, manage, and instruct participants in shipyard programming.
Perform other duties as assigned by CBMM leadership.
