About The Position

The Shipping Lead verifies and supports that shipping functions and procedures are being followed. They prepare items for shipment, which includes picking, labeling, loading/unloading, lifting, operating a forklift, and using handheld RF Scanners. The role participates in continuous improvement, planning, scheduling, and reporting activities, and helps department leaders develop a positive work culture.

Requirements

  • Previous Shipping/Receiving experience required.
  • Must be able to effectively read, write, and speak English.
  • Very strong math skills required for various tasks.
  • Must be able to make good decisions in applying Shipping Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), applying policies in the Employee Handbook, and using good judgment.
  • Must be computer literate with intermediate skills in Excel.
  • Proven ability to motivate, coach, and train subordinates.
  • Must have adequate eyesight and hearing to be able to recognize hazards to equipment and personnel.
  • Must be able to turn in all directions in order to observe objects and employees nearby.
  • Full range of motion in extremities to allow proper movement and handling of product.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for at least 90% of assigned shift.
  • Must have ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally, and up to 50 pounds frequently throughout shift.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma desired.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows all safety rules and regulations, including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a bump cap, ear plugs, safety glasses, and gloves.
  • Ensures that others in the Shipping Department are following all safety rules.
  • Reports non-working equipment to Maintenance.
  • Follows procedures outlined by the Shipping Manager.
  • Understands and follows food safety guidelines and USDA regulations.
  • Is aware of the location of drivers at all times and does not allow drivers to leave loading dock areas.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the daily activities in the Shipping Department to ensure a safe, secure, and clean environment for associates.
  • Ensures associates have proper access to necessary tools and that tools are routinely inspected and maintained.
  • Assists Shipping Manager in ensuring all shipping and receiving processes are followed for accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments, and that all transactions in CAT2 (computer-based processes) are done correctly (building loads, repositioning, scanning orders to manifest, receiving).
  • Performs cycle counting and identifies items and inventory discrepancies to ensure accuracy and maintain inventory integrity.
  • Assists with all movements of inventory from production to designated transfer points, storage, or work areas.
  • Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping procedures and policies.
  • Seals, bill of lading, loaded trailers, and truck doors.
  • Is actively involved in each work function to support shipping/receiving procedures, workflow efficiency, and managing space utilization.
  • Communicates and works effectively with clerks, administration, management, and the team to ensure accuracy of orders, shipments, receives, inventory, or discrepancies.
  • Demonstrates advanced skills with forklifts and electric pallet jacks.
  • Assists Department Supervisor/Manager with organization and leads the focus on improved productivity levels by improving processes and associate work efficiency.
  • Provides feedback and communicates with the leadership team on safety, labor, and best practices.
  • Participates in the completion of process development, projects, and best practices for improvement implementation.
  • Assists with planning, adjusting daily workload and staffing needs in each work function or area to minimize overtime, and provides feedback on any changes affecting department productivity.
  • Effectively communicates work task Standard Operating Procedures, conveys key information during pre-shift meetings, and ensures appropriate shift hand-offs.
  • Coordinates with Department Managers, Supervisors, Quality Assurance, and other required personnel to attain delivery, cost, and quality of service objectives.
  • Performs an end-of-day report including all in/out-bound activities, challenges/issues, safety/lost time, and other necessary activities to support best practices.
