About The Position

A shipfitter contributes to all structural phases of a ship’s hull construction which may include fitting, fabricating, assembly and alignment of a ship’s structure. This role requires a developing knowledge of skills, functional knowledge, and abilities to perform tasks in various areas, including burning, making up plating, blueprint reading, sketching, lay out access cuts and inserts, tank inspecting, foundation alignment, and using portable plasma arc equipment. The mechanic is expected to understand how to perform tasks with minimal assistance, possess knowledge of necessary equipment and protective gear, and in some cases, assist rather than complete tasks independently.

Requirements

  • A mechanic must demonstrate a developing understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships.
  • Must be a candidate for the Maritime Solutions Norfolk Hiring Events
  • Must be a graduate or current student from BAE Systems Trade School Partnership Program
  • Minimum education requirements: High school diploma/GED
  • Minimum relevant experience: 1-2yrs.
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
  • Must be able to wear standard PPE and use basic ship fitting tool list
  • Must be able to obtain a government access badge.

  • Certification in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW or FCA) (a semi-automatic or automatic arc welding process)

Responsibilities

  • Complete basic cutting plate jobs
  • Possess basic knowledge of burning
  • Possess basic of using hook up torch/light torch
  • Align and fit plates
  • Ensure strong backing for the plate
  • Ensure the edges and surfaces were prepared properly
  • Use wedge and dog to secure the alignment
  • Know the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel
  • Read, understand, and interpret basic blueprints to preform task required
  • Review sketches or drawings and be able to perform layouts.
  • Begin to learn how to grind by training
  • Read and interpret basic sketches to complete a layout
  • Perform layout (inserts/TAOs and ripouts)
  • Create temporary access cuts to take something out of a ship or facilitate another trade to get into another compartment or a tank
  • Assess finished access cutting and beveling to ensure that the layout is being executed properly
  • Inspect a tank and document its current status
  • Assist with Testing (Tank/Rutter/Bilge Keel/Air Test Kegs/Air Test High Hats)
  • Blank the tank and install the blanks in accordance with the ISO procedure
  • Know where to test
  • Set up a test rig
  • Install a prefabricated foundation
  • Accurately pinpoint the installation location by reading sketches and drawings
  • Level foundation based on requirements
  • Know framing square and leveling tools
  • Set the foundation either perpendicular or parallel to the baseline
  • Understand the basics of cutting ferrous and nonferrous metals
  • Basic rip out and installation
  • Know the plasma arc machine and its uses through on the job training/reading manuals
  • Possess basic fabrication skills
  • Set up and perform shipfitting tasks as assigned
