A skilled worker who welds and fits metal and metal pipe, like steel or aluminum, to meet specifications. Job duties include positioning and connecting various parts by hand, using specialized equipment.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a shipyard
  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Assist with other miscellaneous jobsite tasks as directed.
  • May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate work records of the project, such as timecards.
  • Meets scheduling and attendance requirements.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions.
  • At times, you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.

Responsibilities

  • Meeting the needs and desires of all customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Requires set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches for pipe using propane, acetylene, and oxygen.
  • Responsible for measuring the length and other dimensions of the pipe and marking and cutting them as per the requirement.
  • A pipe fitter is responsible for welding and threading of the pipes which are going to be used in the construction process.
  • It is the responsibility of the pipe fitter to use tools and equipment such as cutting torches, saws, benders, pipe fitters, and welders to ensure smooth fixation of the pipes.
  • Requires set-up and use of cutting devices shapes typically including Circular Saws, Band Saws, Chop Saws, Jig Saws, and cutting wheels on grinders.
  • Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock and frame lines.
  • Align parts in relation to each other, using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls.
  • Marks locations of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding.
  • Must also be proficient in multiple welding processes such as: Arc welding (SMAW), metal inert glass (MIG) welding, tungsten inert glass (TIG) welding, flux-core welding (FCAW), plastic welding, hard facing, oxygen/acetylene welding, and brazing.
  • Pipe welder must also be proficient in plasma cutting, oxygen/acetylene cutting, tempering, flame straightening, air carbon-arc cutting, and pipe bending. The types of metals used in the welding process vary due to application and may consist of the following: mild steel, pipe (specialty and galvanized), high carbon steel (AR-400, AR500, and T-1), aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and plastic.
  • May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
  • Depending on size and weight of materials being handled, mobile crane or forklifts are used for handling and transportation. Also, depending on size and weight, the designated rigging crew will move the material into place.
  • Responsible of pipe fitter is to examine, inspect and test the already installed pipes as well as other installed systems to check structural weaknesses and then suggest methods to overcome these weaknesses.
