About The Position

This role is for a Senior Reactor Operator In Training, also known as a Shift Support Supervisor In Training at SNC. Southern Nuclear plans to hire Senior Reactor Operators (titled Shift Support Supervisors at SNC) over the next 18-24 months at each plant site, with a primary focus on Plant Hatch in Baxley, GA. The selection process requires advance notice for applicants to express interest. Selected candidates will perform Operations staff functions for plant familiarization to prepare for an upcoming NRC Hot License Class. This involves completing training on reactor operation, heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics, and passing initial screening and annual medical requirements for industrial fire brigade duties. Upon successful completion of the Hot License Class and obtaining an NRC Operating License, the candidate will become a Shift Support Supervisor, responsible for directing operating shift personnel, standing watch on rotating 12-hour shifts, and coordinating the operation of the nuclear power plant's systems. The position requires continuous training, periodic examinations, respirator qualification, and maintaining qualification as a member of the plant Fire Brigade.

Requirements

  • 1 or more years as an active reactor operator at a BWR/PWR facility; OR
  • 1.5 or more years as an active reactor operator at a non-comparable commercial power reactor; OR
  • 2 or more years in a military equivalent position (Engineering Officers of the Watch or Propulsion Plant Watch Officers).
  • Demonstrated leadership, preferably at the supervisor level or above.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Solid analytical thinking.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must obtain U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Unescorted Access.
  • Must participate in the company's Fitness-for-Duty Program.
  • Must complete a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) to obtain unescorted access.
  • Must not have had a positive drug or alcohol test within the past five years.
  • Must not have used or possessed drugs in the past five years.
  • Must not have a felony conviction in the past five years.
  • Must not have recent misdemeanor convictions.
  • Must not falsify or omit information or fail to fully cooperate during the investigation process.

Nice To Haves

  • Six or more years' experience in nuclear plant operations (e.g., Nuclear Navy or commercial power plant), including holding a previous NRC RO or SRO license or military equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • High degree of manual dexterity.
  • Mature judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Operations staff functions for plant familiarization.
  • Prepare for and complete an upcoming NRC Hot License Class.
  • Successfully complete plant-provided systems and fundamentals training on reactor operation, heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics.
  • Pass initial screening and annual medical requirements for acquiring and maintaining industrial fire brigade duties.
  • Upon successful completion of Hot License Class and attaining an NRC Operating License, become a Shift Support Supervisor.
  • Direct operating shift personnel in the performance of plant duties.
  • Stand watch on rotating 12-hour shifts.
  • Coordinate and direct the operation of the nuclear power plant's systems.
  • Undergo continuous training with periodic examinations.
  • Obtain and maintain respirator qualification.
  • Maintain qualification as a member of the plant Fire Brigade.
  • Obtain U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Unescorted Access.
  • Participate in the company's Fitness-for-Duty Program.
  • Maintain qualifications and on-call responsibilities in support of the plant Emergency Response Organization.
  • Complete a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) for unescorted access.
