About The Position

The Shift Supervisor is tasked with leading and managing daily coal mining operations, ensuring that production targets are met safely and efficiently. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and team leadership, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence. The Shift Supervisor will also coordinate maintenance activities and ensure seamless communication across shifts to maintain optimal performance.

Requirements

  • MSHA Surface Certified; trained in surface mining safety and hazard recognition is required.
  • Extensive experience in coal mining operations, with a strong preference for previous experience in a supervisory role, demonstrating the ability to manage teams, oversee daily mining activities, and ensure safety and production goals are met.
  • In-depth understanding of coal mining processes, equipment, and safety protocols, with experience in overseeing daily mining activities.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team, ensuring that operations run smoothly and safely. Experience in conflict resolution, employee development, and performance management is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local mining regulations and safety standards, with the ability to enforce compliance and conduct safety audits.
  • Hands-on experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mining equipment and machinery. Ability to supervise maintenance activities and coordinate equipment outages effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for conducting shift handovers, safety meetings, and training sessions. Ability to document activities and report issues to management clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to identify and address operational issues, make informed decisions under pressure, and recommend corrective actions to optimize mining efficiency and safety.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

  • An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily mining operations, including scheduling and workforce allocation to ensure smooth and efficient production activities.
  • Supervise, mentor, coach, and provide direction to the mining crew in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to company policies, safety protocols, and mining regulations.
  • Actively enforce safety policies and procedures, conducting regular safety audits and ensuring that all workers are using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in training new crew members on equipment operations and safety procedures.
  • Conduct safety meetings and shift training sessions to reinforce best practices and safety awareness.
  • Handle shift-related employee relations tasks, including development, compliance, recognition, and discipline of team members.
  • Conduct or assist with performance evaluations and assessments to promote continuous improvement and safety adherence.
  • Recommend and implement corrective actions when necessary to address safety concerns, production inefficiencies, or personnel issues.
  • Determine daily manpower requirements, including overtime needs, to maintain optimal mine performance, and maintain records of employee attendance and safety compliance.
  • Supervise the start-up, operations, and shutdown of mining equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitor shift operations by reviewing operational data, logs, and other records to identify and address equipment or process issues.
  • Prepare maintenance requests to address equipment or infrastructure issues, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Supervise routine maintenance and inspections of mining equipment and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate equipment and infrastructure outages for scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Ensure hazardous materials and waste are handled safely, in compliance with environmental standards.
  • Ensure mining activities are conducted within design parameters, complying with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Make recommendations to optimize mining outputs and operational efficiency.
  • Report any operational anomalies or safety concerns to management promptly.
  • Document daily activities in the Supervisors' log and oversee the mine's Lock-out/Tag-out system.
  • Conduct periodic log and record reviews to ensure compliance with safety procedures, equipment status, and business systems.
  • Ensure a smooth and detailed handover between shifts, providing the incoming supervisor with all necessary information regarding equipment status, production progress, and any ongoing issues.
