About The Position

This is a full-time, exempt position. The Shift Superintendent is responsible for ensuring safety and environmental compliance at all times, leading safety programs, and managing personnel and operational decisions in the absence of day shift management. This role involves coordinating training, mentoring new supervisors, and working on special projects. The Shift Superintendent also coordinates maintenance resources and acts as the main contact for security issues during their shift.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of production and supervisory experience or equivalent.
  • Timely and consistent self-starter with ability to handle deadlines while prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated participation and leadership in plant safety programs.
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and detailed written are needed to be effective in this position.
  • Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills are vital to effectively interact with multiple employees, management personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Interpersonal skills employed include handling conflict; motivating, instructing, and training personnel in a fair, honest, and direct way.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgment to solve problems, have excellent organizational skills, and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Technical aptitude in math, chemistry, and chemical processes.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required for training.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs safely.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work safely at elevated heights.
  • Able to shift priorities to accommodate changing job demands.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and environmental compliance at all times and be proactive in your support, leadership and participation in the company safety program.
  • Act as the Haz-mat Leader on shift, responsible for conducting monthly activities and drills.
  • Ensure shift employee safety training is completed in a timely manner.
  • Develop employees to focus on safety behaviors of themselves and their fellow employees.
  • Ensure that Incident Investigation Reports are timely for incidents that occur on their shift.
  • Maintain knowledge and responsibility for environmental compliance and decisions on reportable issues.
  • Maintain an understanding and proactively address quality issues throughout the plant.
  • Coordinate and follow through on personnel issues that arise on shift with the appropriate Supervisor and Department Superintendent.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures and practices and recommend changes and/or improvements as needed.
  • Mentor new Shift Supervisors.
  • Work with Shift Supervisors and Department Superintendents to identify training needs and coordinate the training of employees, establishing a high level of skill and job proficiency.
  • Provide input on hourly shift personnel to Shift Supervisors and provide feedback to Area Superintendents regarding the performance of the Shift Supervisors.
  • Work with the Shift Supervisor to maintain discipline within shift and discuss the need for appropriate disciplinary action with the Area Superintendent and Human Resources Manager.
  • Maintain a global understanding of plant operations and be responsible for decision making in all areas of the operation in the absence of day shift management.
  • Ensure completion of requests and instructions in individual department communications.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Plant Superintendent and assist Area Superintendents with project work.
  • Make vital contacts with sales, environmental and other contacts where appropriate.
  • Coordinate all maintenance resources in the absence of day shift maintenance management.
  • Strive to adhere to the schedule to maximize efficiency, while addressing any immediate plant operational needs.
  • Act as the main contact for all security issues in the absence of day shift management.
  • Perform reasonably similar or related duties as assigned.
