About The Position

The Shift Lead at Banfield Pet Hospital performs the duties of a Client Service Coordinator (CSC) and/or veterinary assistant/technician, while also providing leadership and operational support across shifts. This role ensures continuous leadership presence to support associates and clients, guiding paraprofessional staff and assisting hospital leadership in maximizing productivity and profitability. The Shift Lead collaborates with the Practice Manager and Chief of Staff to ensure effective communication with all stakeholders, including clients, associates, Field Leadership, Central Team Support, and PetSmart.

Requirements

  • Two years experience (healthcare, veterinary profession, service-type industry, etc.) required.

  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to reach and grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read information.
  • Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred.
  • Six months experience at Banfield preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Medical background (veterinary technician, human healthcare, pharmaceutical, etc.) with medical terminology training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of a CSC and/or veterinary assistant/technician.
  • Actively recruit new clients by promoting hospital services.
  • Manage the routing of clients and pets to ensure superior client care and maximum productivity.
  • Maximize the number of pets seen by the hospital team to support wellness plan clients.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventative care, pet health needs, and hospital services.
  • Assist incoming clients by completing required documentation, entering pet information and history, and ensuring prompt service.
  • Assist outgoing clients by providing instructions, information, and invoices, dispensing medications, selling retail products, and scheduling future appointments.
  • Manage finances by maintaining accurate balances and utilizing proper opening and closing procedures.
  • Act as support for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure quality pet care and maximize productivity.
  • Communicate with other associates to maintain the flow of patients.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper medical charts.
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized areas.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable.
  • Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
  • Conduct administrative functions as necessary.
  • Assist Practice Manager in developing an efficient, productive hospital team.
  • Support Practice Manager in hospital labor management, including adjusting schedules.
  • Assist Practice Manager in the selection, training, and supervision of the paraprofessional team.
  • Lead by example in providing professional, efficient, and exceptional client service.
  • Effectively resolve client issues.
  • Assist Practice Manager in creating an environment that delivers quality, efficient, and effective veterinary care.
  • Foster an engaging environment for associates.
  • Provide effective communication between associates, clients, hospital leadership, and Central Team Support.
  • Ensure all hospital associates adhere to Banfield dress and grooming guidelines.
  • Ensure all hospitalized pets are prepped and equipment is ready for surgery.
  • Ensure cases are assigned to VAs and they are clear on their work responsibilities.
  • Prepare the team on cases scheduled for the day, assist with transfers, and triage the treatment board.
  • Assist Practice Manager in identifying and solving operational bottlenecks.
  • Confer with field leadership and assist with client resolution decisions and invoice adjustments.
  • Train and mentor new paraprofessional associates.
  • Quality check medical records, go-home medications, regulatory documentation, hospital cleanliness, and timeliness of doctor appointments.
  • Address broken equipment issues and assist in inventory management.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
