About The Position

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations, this position is assisting the Highway Operations Leadership Team in the delivery of the program activities for maintaining the traveled road surfaces, signing, illumination, drainage systems and traffic guidance systems in a safe condition (MTO Standards) and as defined in our safety Control Plans for both Winter and Summer Maintenance. This position will be required to work rotating shifts and work in all road and weather conditions, as well as be on-call during weekends as required and needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in construction, road maintenance or relevant field.
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills. A shift lead will communicate in an unbiased way that is clear, effective and direct.
  • Excellent organizational skills to monitor progress of work activities and keep team members engaged and motivated.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to individual team members, to foster growth and development of our team skillset.
  • Lead by example, showing integrity by doing the right thing even when it is not the most popular decision and is able to correct undesirable behaviors or unsafe conditions upon detection.
  • Excellent knowledge of road repair/maintenance equipment, summer and winter procedures and operations, contract inspection, and maintenance related acts and regulations.
  • Experience supporting winter operations, including monitoring weather and road conditions, coordinating snow/ice response activities, and working with Foremen and winter contractors to support timely and safe maintenance operations.
  • Ability to work independently and with others with little to no supervision.
  • Excellent problem solver that thinks outside the box and is able to find solutions to correct problems upon detection.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound, objective decisions based on facts, operational requirements, and organizational priorities.
  • Valid DZ driver's licence, or the ability to obtain and maintain a DZ driver's licence within a specified period following appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that staff are engaged and trained on the operating components, signage, illumination, drainage and traffic guidance systems as well as ensuring staff have the necessary licences and certifications to carry out their job assignments.
  • Work with, plan, coach, engage and mentor staff ensuring the work is carried out in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Working shifts, assist with the coordination and delivery of winter storm response and winter and summer road maintenance activities.
  • Ensure work carried out by contractors and outside agencies are completed according to contract specifications, MTO standards and are completed being done safely.
  • Highway collision, incident and spill response.
  • Delivery of Weekly safety toolbox talks to staff.
  • Asset management and inspections and data collection.
  • When needed, assist Highway Operations Manager and Supervisor with administration work such as shift scheduling, work scheduling, traffic plans, performance appraisals, recommendations for staff training and improvements, data entry into data bases etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
