About The Position

Under general direction, plans, coordinates, assigns and directs the work of a specific function within a Division, the work of a Bureau, or other operational area of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office. This is a promotional-only position and requires current permanent employment status with Sacramento County.

Requirements

  • Must Currently Hold Permanent Employment Status with Sacramento County.
  • Four years of full-time, paid experience in the class of Sheriff's Sergeant in Sacramento County service.
  • Compliance with Government Code Section 1031.
  • A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment.
  • Be able to meet medical standards as prescribed by POST and detailed in the POST Medical Screening Manual.
  • Possess sufficient physical ability to perform the full scope and functions of a Peace Officer per Government Code 1031 (f).
  • Achieve a minimum standard in the use of a firearm.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor's Degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university may substitute for two of the required four years of experience.
  • Successful completion of a POST certified Management course is required within 12 months from the date of appointment.
  • Incumbents in this class are required to maintain Continued Professional Training (CPT) in accordance with POST regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, assigns and directs the work of a specific function within a Division, the work of a Bureau, or other operational area of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office.
  • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Investigate and resolve disciplinary issues.
  • Plan, coordinate, assign, direct, monitor, and evaluate the work of both sworn and non-sworn staff.
  • Develop or assist in the development of, administer, monitor and interpret budgets and other financial documents.
  • Plan, manage, and complete complex work assignments.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with other departments, employees, community leaders, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively with persons from a variety of socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Analyze problems and develop and/or recommend effective solutions for issues encountered by the Division, Bureau and/or Department.
  • Influence and persuade others to take a desired action and/or direction.
  • Interpret and summarize a variety of data and information, including crime statistics and reports to identify trends.
  • Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Prepare clear, concise, comprehensive reports and correspondence.
  • Train individuals on a variety of law enforcement and administrative issues.
  • Make effective presentations to subordinates, command staff, civic organizations, commissions, elected officials, and the general public.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of grant applications and monitor grant programs.
  • Use computers and related computer software and applications.
