About The Position

This position is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of standard electronic devices. This position may either function as the agency or department-wide technician responsible for the maintenance and repair of electronic devices or involved in the same type of repair independently under a higher-level electronics technician. Employee calibrates, performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide variety of electronic devices using standard equipment. Equipment repaired is generally well documented with wiring and schematic diagrams and factory maintenance manuals. Work is evaluated through analysis of equipment reliability and overall effectiveness of the repair.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of a two-year technical school course in electronics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Each applicant who tendered an offer for employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office will be tested for the use of drugs specified in the county policy.
  • A thorough background check will be conducted and if selected, the employee must submit fingerprints.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • A basic knowledge of electronic principles.
  • A basic knowledge of the fundamentals of physical and applied to electronics.
  • A basic knowledge of mathematical principles as applied to electronic circuit analysis.
  • Familiarity with the operation and uses of the standard test equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic and wiring diagrams, and maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to systematically troubleshoot standard electronic devices.
  • Ability to understand basic maintenance and electrical components of vehicles.
  • Ability to learn and advance with technology.
  • Ability to work with others or as an individual.
  • Ability to work with other Divisions within the Sheriff's Office and within County Government.
  • Ability to fabricate parts to adapt existing equipment to fit into different vehicles.
  • Ability to use computer programs to maintain inventory databases.

Responsibilities

  • Reads and interprets schematic and wiring diagrams and factory maintenance manuals
  • Operates standard test equipment such as oscilloscopes, VOM's, VTVM's, signal generators, transistor testers, and tube testers in troubleshooting and calibrating electronic devices
  • Constructs and installs electronic devices following detailed schematic diagrams and instructions.
  • Evaluates and install electronic devices.
  • May maintain an inventory of the more commonly used electronic equipment.
  • May recommend additional shop equipment or replacement of equipment to supervisor.
  • May supervise helpers.
  • Tear down vehicles as required to remove or install needed law enforcement equipment into both new and older vehicles.
  • Fabricate the necessary brackets needed to mount equipment into different vehicles.
  • Removal of vehicle striping for repurposing as needed.
  • Modify electrical components to add law enforcement equipment to vehicles.
