About The Position

The Burlington Public Library is accepting applications for Shelvers. Primary responsibilities in this job include checking-in returned library items, shelving library materials accurately, assisting library patrons with basic directional requests, and helping to maintain the clean and welcoming atmosphere in the library. Burlington Public Library is located in southeastern Wisconsin, with a municipal population of 10,980 and a service population of 19,500. We are a member of the SHARE Library Consortium, serving Racine, Walworth, Kenosha, and Rock Counties.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures.
  • Ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order, and to develop a working understanding of the Dewey Decimal system of library materials arrangement.
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with the staff and the public.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work.
  • Ability to maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Excellent level of English oral and written skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Paid or volunteer library experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs alpha-numeric sorting and filing tasks.
  • Checks in and arranges returned materials on book carts and reshelves them in proper order.
  • Maintains correct order and straightens materials on the shelves or in the collection while shelving and in other assigned areas.
  • Empties bookdrop and takes returned materials to proper place for check in.
  • Assists with training of new shelvers, as directed.
  • Assists with outside maintenance of walkways as required, including shoveling.
  • Assists with routine inside maintenance as required.
  • Answers simple directional requests and refers more in-depth questions to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
