About The Position

The Shelter Monitor is responsible for overseeing the activities of residents in the shelter/center, ensuring compliance with program rules and expectations. This role is crucial for maintaining the safety of residents and the security and sanitation of the program. The Shelter Monitor is expected to take reasonable actions within established organizational policies and program guidelines, using sound professional judgment to fulfill assigned responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with low-income/at-risk/homeless individuals or vulnerable populations, strongly preferred.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance.
  • Driver’s License with a clear record.
  • Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice.
  • Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates.
  • Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.

Responsibilities

  • Providing a safe, structured environment that meets the needs of the client while maintaining professional and acceptable boundaries at all times.
  • Maintaining positive relationships with clients and management staff.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive and accurate written record of events that occur during shifts, as well as thorough incident reports.
  • Documenting all serious incidents completely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Consulting with the direct supervisor or supervisor on-duty regarding residents’ personal needs and behavior.
  • Utilizing positive behavioral management techniques including verbal redirection and de-escalation.
  • Assisting residents within limits in processing issues and problem-solving.
  • Monitoring all areas of the shelter to ensure compliance with facility rules, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Performing hyper-sanitization of all areas in the shelter.
  • Responding to residents’ requests, complaints, and inquiries.
  • Addressing procedural violations with residents to ensure a clear understanding of expectations and to assist residents with achieving compliance.
  • Conducting orientation/assisting with intake, assigning beds and lockers, issuing linens/personal supplies and other items to residents entering the shelter.
  • Briefing and providing direction and needed assistance to volunteers and/or any other staff.
  • Conducting regular inspections documenting opportunities for improvement.
  • Identifying and responding to any client/resident who is experiencing a problem or crisis to ensure that they are safe and that other service providers are aware of the situation and able to respond with appropriate services.
  • Teaching good personal hygiene skills.
  • Maintaining appropriate boundaries with residents at all times.
  • Gaining a working knowledge of policies.
