About The Position

The Shelter Monitor is responsible for overseeing the activities of shelter residents to ensure compliance with program rules and expectations. This role is crucial for maintaining the safety, security, and sanitation of the program environment. The Shelter Monitor must act reasonably within established organizational policies and program guidelines, using sound professional judgment to fulfill assigned responsibilities. The position aims to provide a safe and structured environment that meets client needs while upholding professional boundaries. A key aspect of the role involves fostering positive relationships with clients and management, maintaining accurate records of shift activities and incidents, and consulting with supervisors on resident needs and behaviors. The Shelter Monitor will utilize positive behavioral management techniques, including verbal redirection and de-escalation, and assist residents in processing issues and problem-solving. Regular inspections and documentation of opportunities for improvement are also part of the duties. The role emphasizes exceptional customer service to support the mission of empowering people to build better lives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with low-income/at-risk/homeless individuals or vulnerable populations, strongly preferred.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance.
  • Driver’s License with a clear record.
  • Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice.
  • Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates.
  • Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years’ experience working with low-income/at-risk/homeless individuals or vulnerable populations

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe, structured environment that meets the needs of the client while maintaining professional and acceptable boundaries at all times.
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients, and management staff.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate written record of events that occur during shifts, as well as thorough incident reports.
  • Document all serious incidents completely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Consult with direct supervisor or supervisor on-duty regarding residents’ personal needs and behavior.
  • Utilize positive behavioral management techniques including verbal redirection and de-escalation.
  • Assist residents within limits in processing issues and problem-solving.
  • Monitor all areas of the shelter to ensure compliance with facility rules, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Hyper-sanitization of all areas in the shelter.
  • Respond to residents’ requests, complaints, and inquiries.
  • Address procedural violations with residents to ensure a clear understanding of expectations and to assist resident with achieving compliance.
  • Conduct orientation/assist with intake, assign beds and lockers, issue linens/personal supplies and other items to residents entering the shelter.
  • Brief and provide direction and needed assistance to volunteers and or any other staff.
  • Conduct regular inspections documenting opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify and respond to any Client/Resident who is experiencing a problem or crisis to ensure that they are safe and that other service providers are aware of the situation and able to respond with appropriate services.
  • Teach good personal hygiene skills.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with residents at all times.
  • Gain a working knowledge of policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
