About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Hotline and Shelter Services, the Shelter Kitchen and Food Coordinator prepares nutritious meals for residents at the Sojourner Emergency Shelter, ensures adequate food supply, and maintains an orderly kitchen that adheres to all required food safety practices. This position is responsible for maintaining and documenting processes and relationships with partners and tracking costs and cost savings as well as providing analysis of costs and presenting cost saving opportunities.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Knowledge and experience in safe food handling practices.
Maintain a current ServSafe Food Handling certification or earn within first three weeks of employment.
Reliable transportation for shopping and food pick up.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, logs, and procedure manuals.
Ability to prepare menus, write instructions, track inventory and costs, and author written analysis on inventory, costs, and trends.
Ability to communicate effectively with residents and other employees of the organization coming from diverse backgrounds and going through traumatic situations.
Model compassion and patience.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
Must have reliable transportation, valid Driver’s License, insurable driving record, and automobile insurance with minimum limits of: Liability Coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 of 2 or more people for injury or death, Property Damage: $10,000, Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist: $25,000 per person and $50,000 for 2 or more people injured.
Regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
Frequently required to talk or hear.
Required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

Experience in residential food service and knowledge of common dietary restrictions is preferred.
Current ServSafe Manager Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

Plan and/or prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals for residents of the Sojourner Emergency Shelter. Ensure that residents have an adequate food supply, especially prior to days off, weekends, and office closings, Communicate clear instructions needed to safely heat, store, or discard meals prepared in advance.
Create weekly menus and share with residents and supervisor. Ensure that the weekly menu is posted in the shelter the week prior (i.e. every Sunday or Monday for the week ahead).
Wash serving pans and work areas to maintain a clean and orderly kitchen environment. On a weekly basis clean fridge, freezers, and other food storage areas thoroughly. Document cleaning activities in log for compliance and historical reference needed for site inspections and other audits.
Load and unload dishwasher.
Pick up meal and food donations from local businesses.
Enlist resident help when appropriate to volunteer for tasks, coach on food safety, and educate regarding nutrition.
Implement and manage Food for Health program including reporting.
Practice safe food handling and sanitation guidelines. Maintain current ServSafe Food Handler certification or complete the certification during the first three weeks of employment.
Record temperatures on all refrigerated units and keep dry areas where foods are being stored clean and orderly.
Track inventory of goods received and distributed, rotating and disposing of expired items as needed.
Ensure all kitchen equipment is in safe working order and supplies for kitchen are kept stocked and stored correctly.
Keep a log of kitchen equipment so that the kitchen is properly stocked with right equipment and properly maintained/repaired.
Order food items, utilizing partners and donations with supplemental purchasing. Track all costs and provide monthly updates and trend reports.
Work with the Development Team to source food items and meals, and build and maintain relationships with food partners and other potential partners.
Coordinate volunteers who are assigned to the kitchen and shelter.Assist with training volunteers and interns.
Attend in-services and department meetings.
Ability to work a regular schedule and have regular attendance at the workplace.
Practice agency polices and safety in the workplace.
Participate in all mandatory meetings and trainings.
