About The Position

The Shell Finishing Processor is responsible for delivering high-quality ceramic molds to the Casting department on time. This involves a series of critical steps including grinding, dewaxing, plugging, cleaning, inspecting, insulating, and repairing ceramic molds to meet strict specifications. The role requires attention to detail to ensure lot integrity and adherence to quality standards throughout the process. Safety is paramount, and employees must follow all plant and department safety rules, operate equipment safely, and identify/report safety issues. Some tasks may involve working with hazardous waste, and specific respiratory protection may be required for certain operations.

Requirements

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction).
• Ability to read, follow, and interpret specifications on Technique Cards, routers, and other special instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
• Must complete PCC's Forklift Driving Safety Certification Training.
• Must complete Radiation Safety Training.
• May be required to complete hazardous waste management training (LPCT only).

Nice To Haves

• Experience in the investing area preferred.
• An equivalent combination of classroom training and work experience.

Responsibilities

• Grind mold edges, vents, thermal-coupling tubes, pins, and open cups to allow wax removal per specifications.
• Assure proper drying time between sealer dip and grinding.
• Maintain lot integrity throughout the process.
• Take shell weights as required.
• Clean handles and/or frames of excess shell materials.
• Break down framed product by removing skirts, nuts, washers, and shell material as needed.
• Remove and clean plastic band from mold platter (LPCS and LPCT only); pull string for shell removal as needed.
• Load dewax carts according to specifications (SSBO only).
• Verify load for size and weight requirements for dewaxing.
• Secure loads for transport and pressurization of autoclave.
• Load autoclave, record time, and operate autoclave.
• Transfer loads to drying oven and operate oven (SSBO only).
• Remove part from autoclave and transport to shell inspection area.
• Remove impurities from nuts, washers, bolts, and frames (LPCT only).
• Clean wax residue from underside of mold and seal openings.
• Prepare hoppers for wax drainage from autoclave (LPCT only).
• Log dewaxed mold weight onto computer terminal (Marginal job function at SSBO).
• Clean mold frames of excess ceramic material and transfer frames to storage or cleaning.
• Start and shut down flash fire furnace, monitor operating controls (SSBO only).
• Load flash fire furnace, which operates at 1900 degrees Fahrenheit (SSBO only).
• Inspect load after furnace operation (SSBO only).
• Complete logs and records for furnace operations (SSBO only).
• Inspect shell for cracks and defects using hand inspection tools.
• Borescope inspection on a limited basis if a problem is noticed (LPCT only).
• Make repairs with cement, wax, slurry, first dip solution, or mesh as needed.
• Plug vents, holes, risers, and pour cups.
• Install filters (SSBO only).
• Verify lot integrity and check ID markings.
• Verify water weight to analyze metal needs and check for leaks.
• Cut, wire, or use mud to attach insulating material to shell as required.
• Inspect shells for defects, including storage damage.
• Mark part and lot number on shell.
• Roll insulated parts to an upright position for final processing.
• Place thermal-couples into mold as directed.
• Place part on special framing fixtures and transport to casting (LPCS only).
• Assist engineers with template design and modifications of insulating material (Marginal job function at SSBO).
• Maintain and complete all logs and records.
• Assure shell ID matches paperwork during each process step and transportation.
• Clean work area, which may include the grinding room sump.
• Meet all production and quality standards.
• Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
• Safely operate all equipment and tools.
• Identify and report safety problems.
• May be required to work with hazardous waste.
• Perform other tasks as directed.
