This role is for job seekers with no trades experience who are willing to complete a two-week, unpaid Sheet Metal trade training program. Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer Marine Trades Training course-to-hire programs. The Sheet Metal Trainee program is held at Tidewater Community College/TCC Skilled Trades Academy in Portsmouth, Virginia, and consists of 80 hours, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. After training, employees work full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. As a Sheet Metal Worker, the employee is first qualified through the shipyard's welding school. The Sheet Metal Department fabricates, assembles, and installs components for aircraft carriers, submarines, and other surface ships. Components include ventilation systems, metal joiner bulkheads and framing, furniture, cabinetry, lockers, ladders and handrails, foundations, weapons spaces, and wet spaces. Work is governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines. The department provides formal and on-the-job training, including basic sheet metal and tack welding, as well as job-specific training.
