About The Position

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students and is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21. Supporting Clerc Center on an on-call basis.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Must have experience working with adults and children in a variety of settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a tutor to families with deaf children.
  • Work with families teaching different strategies on how to read aloud books to their deaf child, using the 15 principles in shared reading.
  • Potential tutors must be able to observe parents reading to their child and then give feedback to families related to different reading strategies.
  • Maintain activity logs and time sheets.
