As a Shared Laboratory Resource Specialist I supporting Cryopreservation, Rederivation, and Colony Health Management, you will perform a variety of laboratory activities independently with minimal supervision at a moderate scientific complexity level while serving as a key support resource for laboratory operations and research customers. This is a primarily lab-based role requiring experience with laboratory operations, including maintaining equipment, managing supplies, preparing and mixing solutions, and supporting daily bench work activities. A significant portion of this role involves working with animals and assisting with rodent breeding, rederivation, cryopreservation, and colony health management activities. The ideal candidate is highly organized, capable of supporting protocol development, and able to contribute to the planning and execution of research studies. In this role, you will also lead and participate in training staff on proper procedures and SOPs, ensure laboratory equipment maintenance, perform related duties, and complete special projects as assigned. A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with occasional weekend requirements based on business needs.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in a relevant scientific field OR two years of relevant experience
Certification in appropriate field may be required per department or core protocol within one year of hire
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action

Nice To Haves

Laboratory or project management experience
Technical and/or procedural experience in a laboratory setting
Tissue handling skills and knowledge of aseptic technique
Experience in reproductive technologies and anatomy
Developing animal care and using SOPS and protocols
Experience applying Good Documentation Practices (GDP) in electronic and/or physical laboratory notebooks
Comfortable handling and assisting with surgical procedures involving small animals in an academic research setting
Experience with rodent breeding, rederivation, cryopreservation, and colony health management activities

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of laboratory activities independently with minimal supervision at a moderate scientific complexity level and functions as a key support to the operations and research customers.
Independently perform proper procedures or SOPs, maintenance of equipment or other duties and complete special projects as appropriate within area and as assigned.
Read and follow experimental protocols.
As appropriate within assigned working area, work with more senior mentor with any questions, training, or other learning requirements to successfully complete assigned work.
Calculate, compile, and communicate data to the Core leadership or internal customer.
Perform quality assurance on all assigned activities per procedures or SOPs.
Perform intake functions for the laboratory such as logging of samples and service requests, and the dissemination of basic information to users. (i.e., minimum requirements for services, costs, etc.).
Record work accurately and completely.
Maintain established laboratory inventories, ordering materials as necessary.
Prepare and operate equipment for experiments, assays, measurements, etc.
Assist in performing minor equipment repairs, according to manufacturer and Core guidelines.
Clean and perform general maintenance on equipment, according to established protocols.
Support the execution and facilitation of specialized services.
Abide by all Institute, sponsor and federal rules and regulations.
Other duties as assigned.
