About The Position

Shack Tutoring provides free tutoring for high-school students in partnership with The Benevolent Society. The program aims to support students who might not otherwise have access to tutoring, acting as a crucial guide for their academic success. Tutoring sessions are held on UNSW's Kensington campus. The Shack Tutoring Officer will be instrumental in assisting with the development, organization, and facilitation of bi-weekly tutoring sessions, matching UNSW students with high-school tutees. This role offers a fast-paced and flexible opportunity for motivated individuals.

Requirements

  • A UNSW student in 2027.
  • Passion for the primary objectives of the program and ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Understanding of university student needs and ability to effectively incorporate these into the program's operations.
  • Excellent communication skills; verbal, written and public speaking.
  • High attention to detail with proven organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines, including the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Experience in engaging student participants and volunteers online and in person.

  • Experience tutoring or being tutored and as a result have gained an understanding of what tutoring entails and what quality make a fantastic tutor.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the supervisor and The Benevolent Society to manage weekly Shack Tutoring sessions.
  • Stay up to date on key changes to course materials.
  • Create tutoring materials with the volunteers for the high school students.
  • Assist in the development of project plans, timelines, budgets, volunteer rosters, run sheets, and logistics for small scale events and executing them within set parameters.
  • Maintain up-to-date content across online platforms (including website, and social media) providing opportunities for students to engage with their communities and in a digital space.
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers.
  • Help to build a passionate community of volunteers and facilitate social, interpersonal and professional development opportunities for them.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication as the point of contact for volunteers to direct and guide them through necessary tasks and events.
  • Track volunteer data and facilitate sufficient volunteering opportunities for AHEGS accreditation.
  • Track metrics and meet targets around student engagement and participation in relation to program goals & KPTs.
  • Complete risk assessments, safety briefings, and other ad hoc administration tasks.
