About The Position

The Sexton is responsible for the general custodial care of the UUFCC building(s) and grounds. This role involves effective communication and collaboration with the Minister, UUFCC staff members, Board President, and the chairs of the Building Committee and Grounds Committee. The Sexton also coordinates with contractors and volunteers to ensure the building and grounds are well-maintained and secure.

Requirements

  • Must be able to climb stairs to access tools and supplies.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb a 10-foot ladder.
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
  • Be able to communicate effectively: have access and ability to communicate through email and by cell phone, and be able to type a report on the computer.
  • Have project management and multitasking skills.
  • Understanding of general building repairs, painting, and other basic maintenance.
  • Have sufficient understanding of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and roofing, in order to oversee and coordinate with contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary emergency contact for alarms and ensure building security by checking that windows and doors are locked, lights and air purifiers are off, and water faucets are off.
  • Inform and collaborate with the Office Administrator to ensure cleaning and maintenance supplies are obtained.
  • Keep maintenance areas organized, including janitorial closets, workroom, Fellowship Hall closet, pantry closet, outdoor sheds, and boiler room.
  • Be aware of events scheduled at the building by referring to the building calendar and plan a work schedule to ensure the building is clean and arranged for all functions, especially Sunday Services.
  • Arrange facilities, chairs, and tables as occasionally requested by UUFCC staff.
  • Clean and tidy areas used after major events and check the security of the building.
  • Inform the Office Administrator if a room was left in disarray or needed cleaning after a rental event.
  • Assist with salting sidewalks and removing snow, especially prior to large events.
  • Keep waste bins throughout the building in order and empty them when necessary, including compost bins.
  • Perform regular cleaning of the UUFCC building as outlined in the Sexton Detail Duties document.
  • Regularly inspect the property to identify maintenance needs, as outlined in the Sexton Detail Duties document.
  • Perform basic maintenance where possible and coordinate with the Minister, Office Administrator, and/or Chairs of the Building and Grounds Committees for needs requiring a contractor.
  • Work with contractors when necessary, collaborating with the Office Administrator, Building Committee, or Grounds Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Building and Grounds Committees to ensure needs in the building and property are met for inspections.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to update staff on property issues.
  • Fill out a monthly property report and one annual property report.
