About The Position

The Severe Needs Para Educator works with individual students or small groups to reinforce material and skills initially introduced by the teacher. The role supports students with severe needs in the classroom and during school routines, including instruction, behavior programs, mobility and personal care, meals, and activities. The position also helps maintain classroom equipment and behavioral records and assists with student supervision during drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.

Requirements

• Meet one of the following: hold an associate degree or higher; complete at least two years or 48 credit hours of study at an institution of higher education; or pass a formal assessment measuring knowledge of and ability to assist classroom teachers in reading, writing, and mathematics (WorkKeys or Parapro Assessment).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
• Operate and care for classroom equipment used for instructional purposes.
• Help students master equipment and instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
• Assist with behavioral modification programs as directed and supervised by the teacher.
• Keep daily and weekly behavioral logs and data.
• Assist in supervising students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
• Assist students with mobility and personal care.
• Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
• Dress for physical education activities to assist students.
• Meet buses and assist students with breakfast and lunch routines.
• Assist with wash-ups, toilet routines, diapering, and toothbrushing.
