About The Position

The Set-Up Operator positions set-up and operate machine tools and equipment in their designated department, such as welding machines, punch or brake presses, hang and assembly equipment according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts, applying knowledge of machining methods. Classification as a Set Up Operator I, II, or III is based on the employee’s score from the Skills Checklist. The Set-Up operator shall be capable of performing all of the diversified set-up operations along with following all plant and department safety rules and meeting satisfactory performance requirements. Take an active role in caring for the equipment to prevent breakdowns and defects and help increase overall equipment efficiency through 5S, TPM (total productive maintenance), and other Lean Manufacturing initiatives directed by the Sedalia site. The person who holds this position will be responsible for all aspects of general equipment effectiveness and reliability, along with total productive maintenance and equipment setup. He/she will also be responsible for all aspects of general equipment preventive/ corrective maintenance including: TPM checklist completion, performing minor machine repairs/ rebuilds, knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical systems, plumbing repair and installation, basic knowledge of hydraulic / pneumatic systems, inspecting equipment for needed repairs and entering work order information into the system for scheduling of work and performing preventative maintenance procedures on all equipment as required. Continuously perform all required tasks in a safe manner, adhering to all established safety rules and procedures. Must take immediate action to correct and/or report any unsafe conditions and hazards. Additional responsibilities include good housekeeping and other assignments as directed by the Supervisor. The Set-Up Operator shall be able to work overtime as requested and posted by management.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate machine tools and equipment in their designated department, such as welding machines, punch or brake presses, hang and assembly equipment according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts, applying knowledge of machining methods.
  • Perform all required tasks in a safe manner, adhering to all established safety rules and procedures. Must take immediate action to correct and/or report any unsafe conditions and hazards.
  • Perform good housekeeping and other assignments as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Work overtime as requested and posted by management.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate departmental welding machines so that parts will be joined by a series of spot welds of acceptable quality as determined by departmental quality standards.
  • Control required dimensions by use of jigs and fixtures.
  • Determine the number of welds and contact cycles as well as regulate current, set automatic timing devices, rig necessary equipment for welding and positioning work.
  • Change and dress electrodes, reposition arms and/or heads, and prepare equipment to do the work necessary for the job involved.
  • Train all new hires and ship ins.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate punch presses and press brakes to perform a wide variety of forming, notching, bending, and punching operations, on a diversified line of products.
  • Set up dies and gauges as well as adjust ram stroke to form materials to proper angle to the capability of the machine.
  • Determine the sequence of multiple pass operations to make required bends on complicated sections.
  • Work from drawings and/or blueprints and possess the necessary knowledge of measuring instruments needed.
  • Hang all products and have the knowledge of designing hang patterns.
  • Change the line over to set hang patterns and speeds according to the schedule.
  • Know what hooks and drops are needed for the product being hung.
  • Train new and borrowed in associates on safe and proper hanging techniques.
  • Operate all machines in assembly and have the knowledge of all assembly functions.
  • Set up the case sealer, label machines and destackers while determining and making the required settings and/or adjustments.
  • Change the ribbon and labels on all label machines in E-Coat and Static Assembly.
  • Maintain all air tools for E-Coat and Static Assembly.
  • Maintain and set up the dropfront panel rivet machines, panel knob machine, and lock rod rivet machine.
  • Run all rollformers in the department.
  • Make any adjustments at forming stations, or punch press section.
  • Load coils, read prints, set up machine, and maintain quality standards.
