This course provides an applied introduction to modern asset management across both institutional and private wealth contexts. Students will examine how investment objectives are defined, how strategic asset allocation frameworks are selected, and how portfolios are constructed and implemented under real-world constraints. The course emphasizes translating financial theory into practice. Particular attention is given to how investor objectives, behavioural considerations, governance structures, liquidity needs, taxation, and regulatory constraints influence real-world portfolio decisions. Students will explore how different types of investors - including pensions, endowments, insurers, banks, and individuals - approach portfolio construction and risk management. The course also introduces practical portfolio construction tools and discusses how asset managers implement strategies through active and passive management.
