About The Position
The International Foundation Program is seeking Sessional Instructional Assistants for the IFP100Y1Y – Themes in World History course, running from September 1, 2026, to May 6, 2027. This course surveys the development of human societies from their origins to the present, using global examples. Topics may include the environment, cultural development and interaction, belief systems, political, economic, and social structures, gender relations, and the interplay of global patterns and local developments. The theme for 2026/27 will explore the impact of food and commodities on world history, with potential topics such as beer, corn, spices, fur, sugar, coffee, tea, cotton, and water. The estimated enrollment is 200 students. Lectures are scheduled for Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with tutorials held on Tuesdays (2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.), Wednesdays (2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.), and Thursdays (2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.). Up to four positions are available, with an estimated workload of 230.5 to 292 hours. The salary is $55.25 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, subject to collective agreement rates.
Requirements
- Completed graduate degree in a historical discipline
- Demonstrated teaching experience in areas related to the content of the course
- Teaching experience facilitating small groups
Nice To Haves
- PhD completed or in-progress in a historical discipline
- Demonstrated understanding of the learning needs of international students who speak English as a second language
- Experience in transitional programs is an asset
- Experience teaching English as a Second Language is an asset
- Experience with online instruction
- Experience in working in a highly collaborative environment
Responsibilities
- Preparing and conducting one to two 1.5 hour in-person tutorials each week
- Holding office hours
- Attending lectures and consulting with the Instructor and/or Lead TA
- Attending meetings set by the Instructor and/or Lead TA
- Advising students about and marking course assignments.
