About The Position

The City of Glendale's Transportation Department provides quality public transit facilities and services that support and enhance a safe and high quality of life for our residents, while helping to improve and sustain the environment. This is the first level in the Service Worker series. Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility. The ideal candidate for the role will have one year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
  • One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
  • Knowledge of: Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
  • Knowledge of: Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
  • Knowledge of: Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
  • Knowledge of: Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
  • Knowledge of: Street layouts and routes
  • Knowledge of: Confined space entry procedures.
  • Ability to: Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
  • Ability to: Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
  • Ability to: Understand and follow safe working practices
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to: Deal courteously with the public
  • Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens
  • Ability to: Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment
  • Ability to: Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility
  • Ability to: Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
  • Ability to: Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers
  • Ability to: Identify paint coatings for material and color matching
  • Ability to: Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices.
  • Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements.
  • Coordinate hand and eye movements
  • Operate city vehicles; depending on area of assignment, may operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment.
  • They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.
  • A post-offer physical assessment is required.
  • Valid Arizona class D driver license.
  • Position in the Streets division require a Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement within 6 months of hire.
  • Work Zone Certification is required for some positions.
  • A WCISA Tree Worker Certification may be required for some positions within Right-Of-Way within six months of hire.
  • The Arizona Restricted Pesticide Certification may be required for some positions within Right-Of-Way within six months of hire.
  • May be subject to call back, stand-by duty, and evening, weekend and rotating shifts.
  • Some positions require Arizona Restricted use of Pesticide Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work, such as repairing streets, laying concrete, carpentry, painting, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
  • Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including brush tractors, dump trucks, mowing and sweeping equipment, trucks, truck with trailers, and Fire vehicles.
  • May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
  • Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
  • Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, direction of traffic, hazardous materials, and operation of equipment.
  • Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed; answers questions from citizens.
  • Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
  • Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
  • Operates city vehicles which may require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) depending on area of assignment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs skilled, and semi-skilled landscape construction, maintenance and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.
  • Maintains right-of-ways, undeveloped properties and alleys.
  • Trims trees and bushes, cares for plants, and applies herbicides and pesticides.
  • Operates heavy equipment, chainsaws, weed eaters, brush tractors, front-end loaders, and other landscape equipment.
  • Installs tests, maintains and repairs irrigation systems, vacuum breakers, valves and clocks.

  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).
  • Retirement: This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 11.98%.
