About The Position

The Roads and Drainage Division for Polk County is responsible for the maintenance of existing county-owned roadway and drainage infrastructure, and the construction of new infrastructure to provide safe roadways for our residents and visitors. Roads and Drainage also receives and reviews Utility Right of Way Permits as well as road and lane closures on county roads. The Division has six sections to include Administration, Project Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Asset Management, Survey & Mapping and Roadway Maintenance, which includes Drainage. This role requires a valid Class A or B CDL.

Requirements

  • Must have the physical, developmental, and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities and duties of the job.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation of equipment.
  • Ability to make routine maintenance checks and emergency repairs of equipment.
  • Ability to see, hear sounds at a normal level, ambulate independently, drive from work site to work site, bend, stoop, sit and stand.
  • Ability to use multi-hand and/or foot controls.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials that are a minimum of five (5) pounds and greater with the average weight being forty-five (45) pounds.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment that may be required by supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold, swamp, ditches, dirt, and hot asphalt).
  • Service Worker/Equipment Operator I: Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of road equipment required of the work unit.
  • Service Worker/Equipment Operator II: Six (6) months experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of equipment required of the work unit.
  • Service Worker/Equipment Operator III: One (1) year experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the primary piece of equipment required of the work unit.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Commercial Class "B" driver's license at the time of application for SW/EO I and II.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Commercial Class "A" driver's license at the time of application for SW/EO III.
  • A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of licensure.

Nice To Haves

  • May operate small gasoline or other powered machinery such as concrete mixers, air hammers, compressors, pumping equipment and saws.
  • May operate heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.

Responsibilities

  • Primary operation of construction and maintenance equipment at least 50% of work effort.
  • Performance of manual laboring tasks.
  • Operates one or more of the following: 5 - Yard Dump Truck, Tractor (Belly Mower), Tractor Mounted Broom, Flat Bed Dump Truck, Chipper Equipment, Tree trimming equipment, Hydro Mulcher, Grader, Vacuum Truck, Asphalt Distributor, Gradall (Telescoping Boom Excavator), Bulldozer, Heavy Crawler Mounted Backhoe, Transport, Wheel Loader or End Loader, Boom Mounted Hydraulic Mower/Ditcher, Lightning Loader (Trash Truck), Self-Propelled Mixer, Tractor Mounted Backhoe/End Loader, Sterling Bucket Truck, Self-contained Pothole Patching Truck.
  • Operates equipment with mechanical attachments requiring manipulation of vehicle and attachment controls.
  • May operate smaller equipment such as dump trucks or other light equipment.
  • Operates heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.
  • Washes and cleans equipment and provides routine maintenance.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned.
  • May act as lead worker when assigned.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
